edit: Now that I sit down and think abit more about steins;gate I guess I can see why there's such rabid love for it. It's a mixture between romcom harem, SoL and "Syfy" which is almost the holy grail of genres for the casual anime viewer-base. Casual viewers like SoL? Really doubt that.

casual viewers probably watch only english dubs so can't even imagine what's going on in their heads :D

Lmao MAL scores are such a joke(Not that that is news to me), the OPM anime is ranked 20th before even airing.
Why can people even rate shows that haven't aired yet, great job MAL.

Gintama, as well as various Type-Moon things, also got rated highly before they aired. I mean.....w/e lol

Dub lovers * shivers*. That's a terrifying thought.

Ratings are more about popularity than anything. Then you get the odd hipster popular shows like LoGH which while good gets insanely hyped coz it's the popular hipster choice.

I know that it's about popularity, i just find it fairly stupid that their system doesn't prevent stuff that hasn't aired yet from being ranked.
They even label shows with Airing/Finished Airing and Not yet aired.

Yea it's pretty dumb. Should only allow ratings for finished shows but whatever at least this just further discredits it lol.

part of the reason MAL couldn't change anything was because they were owned by Crave which didn't allow any of the site admins to make any edits to how their site worked, or some shit like that
MAL abandoned crave recently so the management is back to trying to focus on making edits to the site, but they're making changes on a rather long priority list. a few recent additions that have been a long time coming include mobile design and random forum changes
people have been crying about the same thing about ratings for a while now, so it's not like the administrators don't know the problem exists. still, i'm not sure why people care, but whatever

Why can people even rate shows that haven't aired yet, great job MAL. I have Kizumonogatari rated at 10/10, nothing wrong with that

mmmmm, iono
I think with how ubiquitous old school romcom/sol shows like Friends are, I imagine SoL is pretty popular across all mediums. i mean just look at Clannad for anime~ a lot of anime typically aimed at younger males includes lots of action/adventure/fantasy and i think that particular type of anime probably is the most popular among fans from what i've seen, but SoL is still pretty big @_@
also, Sazae-san is sol and that's pretty big edit: I was also thinking of shin-chan, not doraemon
|
Almost all romcoms have elements of SoL in them. Pure SoL shows like Aria may not be popular but shows with SoL elements def are popular. Hell even SAO had a large amount of random SoL throw into it and that's super popular.

I haven't seen Clannad so I might be full of shit, but isn't it loved mostly for the drama in After Story while many think the first part (which I assume to be more SoL-centric?) is boring?
Also, I assume Numy was referring to the Western viewer base.

Just because some popular anime have SoL parts it doesn't mean SoL as a genre is popular among casual viewers.
Heck, going back to S;G, a lot of the comments I read about it go something like "the first half was boring but the second half was amazing".

Isn't half the shit that kids and teenagers watch SoL? Every sitcom is pretty much SoL too and god knows how many sitcoms they made.
|
I liked the first half of s;g >_>
being mad scientist is so cool~

Clannad S1 holds up by itself. It had minor luls but its legit good. After Story just casts a large shadow.
|
S;G was fun for me+ Show Spoiler +when shit started hitting the fan aka unlimited death works by the tuturu girl .
Clannad s1 is not bad it had some episodes i don't care about like "Fuko arc" or that library girl arc but everything else was either hilarious or emo
and After Story owns.
EDIT:
guys my friend wanted me to watch plastic memories .. Yay or ney ?

SoL is popular in general. It might not be as popular as say shounen stuff for the mainstream audience but SoL is easy to get into for a reason. Like previously mentioned, it's literally the sitcom of animu.
