just ask for a rec then, as long as your request isn't on goody's level I will be able to find an anime for you to enjoy, so will the others in this thread.

I thought about it for a while and it would probably be impossible for me to narrow down just 1. There are so many different ways I might define it.
I will do a top 5 but even that is somewhat harder to do.
In no order probably
The Monogatari series
The Fate series (the ufotable ones)
Clannad series
Hataraku Maou-sama!
Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka.
If they combined the best story arcs of A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Railgun into one that would def be up there as well.
Kind of a mix of shows that have really high rewatchability (Maou-sama and KwZDK) and those that left greater/lasting impressions or had really great characters.

Don't have a favorite(or rather, i'm too indecisive to choose a favorite) but...
My most memorable Animus are Gundam Seed, Seed Destiny, and neon genesis evangelion. I'll probably still remember them in 20 years.

Why are you being so hard on me about this? I didn't necessarily want a rec...and besides, i'm at a point where i'm not even sure what i like. To be honest, i like everything. Every genre i've seen so far i've found something i like. an example of my confusion is: previously i used to feel i didn't really like mecha but i've been slowly coming to realize that some mecha is not that bad at all (and can actually be really good).
i'm a little more curious about what shows people here really loved... and like with Slaughters reply (for example) i've watched and really enjoyed 3 out of his 5...so i probably will add the other 2.
and to Slaughter, man i really liked both index and railgun. I gotta say though, they both had a different feel that i doubt would have made for a good combo ...like index was more about the magic side and railgun was more about the academy city side. i liked them separate b/c i don't think a bunch of railgun stuff fits into the magic side that index has and vice versa. On top of that index felt way "darker" and more serious while railgun was a good lighthearted girly thing.

ya know, i'm not the biggest mecha fan but i've been coming around to it, and ppl have been telling me to watch gundam seed and seed destiny even when they knew i didn't like mecha. I should probably check these out.

Definitely check out Seed, but I would avoid Seed Destiny. No one likes Seed Destiny.

Rurouni Kenshin (upto episode 62 only, read the manga after that)
Cardcaptor Sakura (for real)
FMA brotherhood(the adaptation the manga deserved)
Monogatari series
Barakamon and Nozaki kun(I genuinely enjoyed the anime to these series)
Slam Dunk(best sports anime ever)
Diamond No Ace( 2nd best sports anime)
I generally prefer manga to anime so my list is rather lackluster.

If I start going any farther than that I'm going to start listing dozens of anime. Gundam SEED is good, no one likes SEED Destiny. Card Captor Sakura is among the worst anime I've ever been tortured to watch, thanks Nagisama

Build Burning incorporates some of the Turn A's features, such as self-repairing Nano-machines

this right here, i coulda used like 5 months ago when i watched rurouni. lol i absolutely agree with you there 
Also, barakamon and nozaki were both brilliant...i had so much fun watching those...especially nozaki-kun. Barakamon had some amazing moments but sort of fizzled out towards the end for me i'm not sure why.

uhh if you don't really like mecha, i would recommend staying away from seed destiny with a 10ft pole. It's a pretty controversial show and that's not just here.

I suppose to make it fair I should post some of my own. In no particular order:

Cowboy Beebop (these first 3 are what got me into anime originally, also DBZ did, but i wouldn't put it in my favorites)
Angel Beats (this one really got me into watching anime after not seeing any for like 2-3 years)
Bleach ***up to the point where they save Rukia episode 50 or 60. Some of the later stuff was also good, but not as close (filler killed the rest)

there's probably more, but these were all 10's on my MAL and i've seen them all at least 5 times all the way through (usually more...except bleach...3 times for 350+ eps. was enough, now if i rewatch it's only the first 50 or so)
