People say that about Nanoha too. Doesn't stop fans from shipping yuri pairings. People even ship yuri for precure, which is originally meant to be grade school magical girl anime.
And yes, Madoka is worthless enough that rather than citing anything about the show itself, I'd rather talk about doujin shipping characters as a merit for it.

Nanoha is great. First movie is a good substitute for first season (which has a lot of filler). Second movie has cool beam but doesn't do A's justice.
