Kirito strong and independent in the beginning? Independent, sure. But he was independent because he was a social fuck up, and even was on the verge of a mental breakdown over that Sachi stuff (not that the anime covered how borderline suicidal he was in that part lol). And as the second season will point out, hes also traumatized over PvP. Of the first half of SAO, I honestly think that the worst parts were most the side story stuff they crammed in. Everything from Episode 2, up to when Kirito and Asuna team up 2 years later, were all side stories. Also their honeymoon was a side story, which is kind of hilarious considering Yui being so important in ALO. The 2nd episode was the only side story material I felt 'fit'. Putting all that other stuff where they did no only contributed to a semi-bait and switch, but for me absolutely murdered the pacing of what was otherwise a passable, if extremely generic, story.

If I am to believe wikipedia, then fight scenes, violence and long, full shots of robots in mecha shows are also fanservice lol but I don't see them as such. It's not like I gush at any of those and violent scenes like that episode 2 in Akuma can turn me off an anime so ya, I think I have my own definition of what fanservice is. Where is the grimmy, action, survival show that the show advertised ? Yeah the occassional fight scene's were great but everything else was shit.. Kirito at the beginning was like a cool, strong independent character and asuna was so badass. I don't mind romance between them as long as you know they didn't goddamn focus the romance like i am watching chunnibyou instead of some virtual action fantasy. Basically everything that was introduced in the beginning of the show that hooked me in was not retained. They replaced it with what every single mediocre action,fantasy anime has shown that involved a harem. A really shitty whiny MC, a helpless female character and every single awesome part of it was turned into garbage . I am thankful that the fight scene were still quite good even when Kirito's plotarmor is unbelievable. Well to be fair the LN was also like that so there was nothing to complain about since they are just following the source material. Enough with the SAO rant. I haven't been writing huge walls of text for most animes for a bit of time now lol. Most I've done is maybe a paragraph as I go through the anime (maybe more than one time) then once its finished, I'll write a couple of paragraph so ya, you can't assume I dislike it based on that.
