Please! I can't handle reading it!" People get pissy because sometimes people word their opinions fairly strongly for absolutely no reason and that offends those who liked whatever is getting shit on. I don't see why people care so much anyway. Who the hell cares if someone in this thread calls an anime trash. Everyone's opinion really only matters to themselves anyway so why bother caring if someone calls something you like trash. Why bother caring at all then? Obviously if you care enough you'll get annoyed. If you didn't care then you wouldn't bother responding in the first place. What's the point of a discussion thread if people are just going to ignore each other because they don't give a fuck? I'm talking about getting offended. Sure you can have discussions based off those differing opinions but getting offended is useless. If I have already watched and formed my own opinion of a show why would it matter what others say about it? I only care about peoples opinions on shows I haven't seen yet. One gets offended if they feel emotionally invested enough in a matter, is there anything wrong with that? Good for you if you feel nothing about what other people think of a certain subject, but is there any reason to tell people not to bother? I wasn't really telling them now was I? This thread gets mucked up over these types of issues constantly and I simply stated that I don't get why people do this over and over again. You mean that you think that other people should also care less about the matter, like you, and not bother with it? That's just as preachy you realize. If you actually don't care then you can just not bother reading. There is some addon which allows you to block out users' posts, there is also just not reading the thread. At the point of posting and pointing it out you are already trying to force your opinion through. Stating your opinion doesn't make you "preachy" or "trying to force your opinion through". Its stating it, people can agree or disagree and even respond to it if they want to. That's a discussion that can turn into a debate if two sides can't agree. Its different from arguing for something you like vs being defensive/offended and arguing. It shapes the language of the posts considerably that get increasingly offensive until it cools down. This cycle continues endlessly in this thread. I also didn't say people shouldn't care but that I don't get why they get worked up and drawn into these arguments over someone elses opinion. The issue is getting offended, not that there can't be any debate. Telling me that being offended is the issue is already preachy in itself. Is there anything wrong with getting offended over something? If I am going to read something and actually get annoyed enough about it to state things a certain manner, it is none of your business to tell me not to do so. Is it constructive? Not particularly, but if people feel like to argue then let them argue. Civilized discussions are fine, but if I feel like to take a belligerent position then I should damned well be able to do so. If you think that something is getting out of hand, then you can report to the mods about it and see what they think. This thread gets mucked up over these types of issues constantly and I simply stated that I don't get why people do this over and over again. Because sometimes, we are not having a discussion and I believe this to be the key issue here. I'm pretty sure a discussion takes place when both party engage in talking with mutual respect. Of course, this is Internet, so it's really hard to know what others are really trying to say. Some people are used to type really fast and won't check their sentences before posting. Some people are actively trying to troll or to provoke others. Or perhaps some people are not able to formulate their ideas in a way that will not provoke others. OR, some people may just be too sensitive. You can say something like : I don't like Angel Beats because X Y Z reasons. Or I think it is a bad anime for the same reason. This can be a positive discussion about an anime. But if you say : Angel Beats is trash... X person has bad tastes... because of how you articulate your opinion, some people will get angry because they genuinely enjoyed the show and because they are attached to it, they will feel the need to defend it. Of course, some people will get mad for the slightest reason, but I believe it is not the case. Also, I wasn't arguing for the end of all discussion. I was merely saying that if you disagree with someone and you realize there's nothing else to do, then there's no point in continuing. For example, if a friend genuinely enjoy Justin Bieber, I will sincerely disagree. If nothing else, let's just agree about our disagreement. I won't try to convert her to my beliefs ; neither will she because we respect each other's choices. I'm pretty sure most of us enjoy the ADT (if not, why would we be here?). I'm also confident that this can be a better a place if we actually put some effort into posting constructive posts. OF course, we are all slackers and will usually reply only partially, which can lead to misunderstanding.. Frankly I am not always looking for a civilized discussion. Those are nice, walls of text are really nice at that, but at times I just want to call AB trash and call people out when they feel like to defend the said trash.
I would argue that I am not being simply because I was musing to myself why this happens because I don't understand it. Unlike the tone of a lot of your posts in this particular discussion, I don't phrase things to where I imply that my words are coming from a source of authority. Its fine if you don't want to have civilized discussion, I never said I disliked or was offended by the mud slinging that goes down here. Its likely that I just don't have enough experience in this thread to know the nuances of the discussion, which is why I mused out loud why people seem to follow this particular pattern of " call AB trash and call people out when they feel like to defend the said trash".
Remember, I never told you or anyone how to act or not act. You seem to have taken it that way though, and for that I am sorry.

instead of discussing this, you should all watch some nichijou.

I'm still not caught up previewing all the shows that I want to watch for this season lol. It does look like it might be something that I would like though, so I will give it a try.
Edit: Outbreak Company seems to be interesting if they explore deeper the culture shock and the issues of societal development and equality. I wonder if they will go down that dark road though in this type of anime.

In general it is rare for any author to go down that path, other than the maoyuu guy there is that 'Gate and thus the JSFD fought there' one, others just stay pure fantasy and never really go into details.

Ah that is disappointing since the 1st two episodes seem to imply that they want to take it that direction. I did like maoyuu but I haven't read/watched a lot of it outside one of the manga adoptions (seems like there are a few of them?) I guess I will have to look into reading the LN because I liked the concept.

Thus far that one is following along nicely, and afaik maoyuu doesn't have much in the ways of English translation. So unless you are KR/CH/JP fluent you are probably out of luck. The Gate JSDF one also has a manga that's getting translation, but the source goes into more details. That one kind of wimps out by the end though and doesn't go as much into the impacts of the clashing cultures.

Huh. This is probably the closest I've ever seen someone openly (and sincerely) admit to trolling.

I'm not sure what one I ended up liking best because there were a couple I was following (I stopped following it because like you said there is a lack of english translations). Ah even the LN translation on Baka-Tsuki seemed to be stalled >< Thus the life of a non-fluent speaker: Being at the mercy of companies deciding to translate or awesome fan translators. Makes me want to learn Japanese except I don't have any time to devote to it.

No, it's just ecael bottling up so much anger inside with all those years of having a diplomatic and reserved opinion about almost everything. Sometimes you just gotta let it out. I don't like when people use the word trolling for everything disagreeable or provocative. It's one word clumping together so many different variations and even contrasts of intention. I don't see why people persistently cling to a word that has lost it's meaning so many years ago.
