Tenchi Muyo did you watch GXP? Which I found enjoyable though not best work
I never heard someone like Death Note / DBZ and hate FMA >.<V mmm...
Well, just start with my generic list of epic works: Full Metal Panic (all) Last Exile (only first one) Fate Zero (it is not that easy to get into without any background info, but should be epic enough to carry you through)
Ones you might like: Trigun Gungrave Black Lagoon (both season and OVA)
Warning, read below if you want more generic stuff / headache:
+ Show Spoiler [Gundam, may or may not be your thing:] + The 08th MS Team Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket Gundam X Turn A Gundam Gundam Seed (your choice of dipping into Seed Destiny or not, it's not great but not the worst thing ever like some claims either)
+ Show Spoiler [Ones you might or might not like:] + Noir Baccano Ghost in the Shell Gunslinger Girls Wolf's Rain Witch Hunter Robin (probably not because it's similar to FMA in some ways)
+ Show Spoiler [Great work of different genres:] + FLCL Nanoha (all 3) Madoka Scrapped Princess Suzumiya Haruhi (you might want hold off second season unless you want have lots of angst) Air (if you like it then it would open a ton of possibility) Haibane Renmei Cross Game Utawarerumono Stellvia Fruit Basket Aria Marimite (last 3 are all very shoujoish, but alot people like them) Futakoi Alternative (OK, I just threw it here because I like it and not many others do)
+ Show Spoiler [Old stuff:] + Original Gundam series Touch Maisen Ikkouku Escaflowne Lodoss War Lain Legend of the Galactic Heroes Martian Successor Nadesico

I think you just gave him a headache instead of simply recommending him something without actually giving him a decent description. Could just have linked him the pic in the sticky above instead if you wanted to go that path since it at least tells what genre you're talking about.
SayGen you should try out Black Lagoon or Ghost in the Shell. Depending on what you thought about them more spoonfeeding can be arranged.

Well, goes by group. I'd assume people would do some googling to see what the show is generally about before watching anyway...
First two group he should check out, rest if he feels adventurous, I will spoiler it to make it clearer

Most people who want to watch anime (first timers) usually look at the list and still ask - because 99% of the time the images themselves don't look too... interesting. Hence why people still ask.

No I understood your post that instead of making a long list of anime to watch - that you should read the image above.
But unless you actually know what the anime is or get really good recommendations from people, first time anime watchers aren't going to be completely enticed from the images/names provided in the list - simply because they do not know enough about it.
Sure, we may know that most of the anime listed is super good - but they don't. Hence why people ask still and prefer long explanations as to why they should watch it.

No, my point was that his post was just an inferior version of the sticky list. He did not specify anything about any series aside from them being either old or epic while listing quite a lot of them.
At least the sticky has genres and pretty pictures attached to it. I think if you bother to make so many recs you should be nice enough to sort them properly.

Code Geass is usually a safe recommendation for people who liked Death Note. It has its haters in this thread, but it's highly rated and very popular. As already mentioned, you'd probably like Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex too.

It made me feel so smart, because the main character is such a genius. Plus, the mind games and such in the show go very deep, so it is very intellectually stimulating, its like watching high level BW, but with noodle people.

Wait... Code Geass is highly rated and very popular? At the time of its airing the general consensus is that it's one of those so bad it's so good in a gawking at trainwreck kind of way. What happened??!

Really? I actually know several people who watch/read much, much more than I do (and lots of older series) who quite enjoyed Code Geass. Though casuals who don't watch that many older series seem to like it a lot by convention? It's definitely quite popular with layanimepeople afaik.

The top chart shows covers, titles, and genres: about as much as you would see just browsing and seeing the front of a disc case at a store. If a prospective watcher wants to figuratively flip the case and read a synopsis, all he has to do is type the title into google. It isn't always pointless to discuss recommendations, but if the discussion just becomes: person A pasting a list of titles he liked, and person B replying with a list of titles he thinks person A would like... the exchange is far less rich than just person A doing his homework and looking up stuff about shows he sees in the top chart.
Of course I don't mind if someone elaborates on why he liked certain base anime to use for recommendations, or asks specific questions about anime he's considering watching.
But there are way too many shows worth watching to give an adequate answer to "hey what are some good shows to watch" or similarly catch-all queries.

Eh... I personally never point people to that list, because I would never rec about half the shows on it to others, so doesn't feel right.
And because it doesn't have Last Exile... totally unforgivable

I think you have to admit that your tastes in anime are wildly different than the average person and probably skewed by the people you talk to (this community included). Not that there's anything wrong with that.
For what it's worth, Code Geass is ranked #11 on MAL and #3 in popularity. So yeah, people really do like it. It may not pass muster with the hardcore otaku crowd, but this guy clearly isn't in that group.

And because it doesn't have Last Exile... totally unforgivable People have different taste. The list is generally the most popular well received shit. For example I thought Haibane Renmei was a mediocre anime. Didnt really care for it but its one of your faves ^^. I got a friend who doesnt give a shit about good charaterization but likes drama and shit so i recommend things like Steins gate even tho I dont think much of it,
I admittingly am a sucker for surreal bullshit. Thats why Penguindrum is probably my top 5 favorite anime but I can understand if people hate it or something ^^,

Re: Geass It was a pretty good show but got great when it stopped taking itself seriously. Definitely an anime I rewatch every now and then.
New GE: + Show Spoiler +Aaaaaaw nice for a positive mini-arc to contrast with all the angst from the last one. At least someone is getting positive character development lately.
|
But not many people liked Code Geass (for correct reasons) while it was airing, AFAIK. Somehow the perception changed afterwards. Though I wasn't paying attention to western community at the time so maybe US always liked it?

Oh I have no problem with that at all. I have no problem with other people recommending that list or anime on it that I wouldn't. It's just I don't feel right doing that. Obviously I'm going to recommend stuff that I liked and thought whoever asked might like also.
