I thought Chizuru route was all right, though a bit overly dragged out. Wasn't really a fan of Chizuru as a character, but I think her route improved my impression of her slightly, going into Unlimited.
Meiya really grows on you and yes Sumika is adorable 
Regarding other side routes to meet the relevant side characters for the rest of the series, I'd suggest at least going up to meeting Tama's dad in Tama route and speed-reading Ayamine route to be familiar with Sagiri.
For Unlimited, I'd suggest Meiya route + fast-forwarding one more time to get Yuuko (bad) end for an extra laugh in MLA.
Also as a side note, after thinking about it some more, I'd strongly recommend people read the VNs before watching Total Eclipse. The anime only covers the bare minimum as far as background material, so there's quite a bit of stuff that may not make much sense to the uninitiated (such as why mecha, why fanservice suits, the complex political aspect, different strains of BETA and BETA tactics, etc). And stuff like the cameo in Ep 1 by + Show Spoiler +. And Ep 2 has much more impact when you realize that it was just the + Show Spoiler +smaller species alone owning stuff; the BETA weren't even using any of their big guns other than the brief appearance of the Fort class that didn't even do anything other than have the TSFs bounce off it

Sumika is mid tier for most of it (especially at the beginning), god-tier at a few times. + Show Spoiler +DIARIES makes you sadface ;;
Go Tama route only cos no fucking Lacrosse. It's dull and generic apart from that.
Skip Class Rep, do Ayamine's route cos it and the Marimo bad end are the only side routes that aren't awful.
Unlimited just literally pick your fave heroine and get through it all. I thought Sent was joking and did it like 3 times but it was just same shit all over. And Yuuko sucks, I wish she went flying off a cliff during Extra already.
The game needed far more Kashiwagi btw.

The picture with the blond guy and the dark haired guy with Christian cross's hearings is from Fate Stay Night? I haven't seen the anime but the blond guy reminds me of archer (from Fate/Zero) so much ...

I guess the crosses do give it away, but I mean...sometimes it's hard man.

Went with Meiya first, feels like that was the best one to do first, though the fact that I had to completely fucking crush Sumika to do it made me sad. Oh and I hate Cizuru too, even in unlimited, makes me wish that + Show Spoiler +she was the one "missing" in Unlimited and not Sumika... and that she never ever shows up again. Ever. Never ever. Ever.

Touhou just means East. ie. G-Gundam. It's an incredibly unoriginal name and used too often.
... obviously US trademark laws dgaf but I think Japan took the common sense route here.
