Basically I watch anime that has an extreme depth in the characters, as this is what I feel holds a series together (idependent of the genre). Genre is not a problem, nor is violence/nudity/etc. + Show Spoiler [Anime I like] + Neon Genesis Evangelion - I don't usually like mecha anime; but the depth of the characters coupled with the existential philosophy gripped me. FLCL - Again the characters were amazing, what's more the comedy made me chuckle quite a bit. I also loved the surreal element, and the way this helped with the commentary on teenage isolation. GITS Stand alone complex - Characters had large amount of depth, and the social commentary throughout and the thought provoking analysis of life's meaning blew me away (I actually preffered this to the manga/film) Cowboy bebop - The soundtrack of course! Again the depth of characters coupled with the setting made this anime one of my favourites I've ever watched (which surprised me, as I kind of just stumbled upon it) Eve no jikan - Yeah this one is pretty unknown... but yeah, it explored the relationship between robots and humans (kinda like GITS, but in much more depth). Really interesting setting and very cool style. Higurashi - Very well done mystery anime. I loved the visual novel as well, but I feel the anime works better due to the visual novel's shitty translation. I haven't been able to find another good horror or mystery anime after watching this D:
Other: -Patlabor 1 & 2 -Paprika -Spirited Away -Basically Satoshi kon's filmography, lol -Darker than black (this one was another surprise, as I thought it would be generic, but turned out to be amazingly fresh)
+ Show Spoiler [Couple of example anime that I dislike] + Please don't hate me for this list! I'm just putting it here to allow people to reccommend me anime that I'll enjoy! Sorry if this offends anyone. Samurai Champloo - I just couldn't get into this, mainly because the characters seemed overly quirky, the philosophy was way too forced, and the 'filler' sections got way too stupid (e.g. the baseball episode). Also The main story never gripped me D: (though the soundtrack was balling) Planetes - again the characters were overly quirky. Shame as it sounded like it might have been good if the protagonists weren't so annoying. Naruto/One piece/Bleach/etc - I really dislike these sprawling infinite-long anime.
Thanks. Looking forward to recommendations! Ergo Proxy Serial Experiment Lain Black Lagoon Trigun School Days Pretty much any Ghibli Studio films Kaiba Shiki Baccano Bakemonogatari
That's all I can think of for now, but that should keep you busy for a while

I wouldn't watch Trigun.
Hmm, your tastes are similar to mine, although I loved Planetes. Did you get far in it, or did you quit early? The growth of the main character throughout the series was amazing. That said, I only read the manga (>_>)
I would highly recommend Honey and Clover, and possibly Mushishi. Those two will give me at least a better picture of your tastes.
Ignore School Days also, that's a troll suggestion.
As for other stuff, I second Black Lagoon but it may be too quirky for you and takes a while to really get going, Gunslinger Girl, possibly Noein, House of Five Leaves...

Stein was another show that I didn't like the first EP of, but by the time I got to the 3rd I was really interested in what would happen next. This season seems to be getting slightly better for me.

Seriously don't watch Ergo Proxy. Only pretentious people get off on it. It is seriously nothing but porn for the fake intellectual.
If you do watch it be prepared to do one of the following:
1) Never ever talk about it.
2) Talk about it and like everyone else (including the creator) pretend like you know wtf is going on and tell everyone that doesn't that they "just don't get it".
If you consider references that go no further then naming the title or the names of philosophers, to be the height of intellectual fullfillment then by all means watch it.
Seriously that show was so pretentious. I think the only thing more full of itself then that show was the french movie Caché. A black guy randomly bumps into the main character on his bike and suddenly it's a critical analysis of racism in modern france.

I echo everything said here... there are lots of shows that are genuinely intellectually stimulating. Ergo Proxy is not one of them.
If you're considering Ergo Proxy, watch Ghost in the Shell instead.

He already did! Hoo hah hah hah!
I'm glad I'm not the only one that disliked EP, I hear it recommended all the time and thought it was kinda bleh.

I am not trolling about School Days, I genuinely think it is a good anime :X
Really, people don't like Ergo Proxy that much? I found the philosophy there kind of meh, but it still has a pretty good story.

Im watching 4 series right now from the new season.
1) Steingate 2) The Blue Exorcist 3) The Money of Soul (Friggin sick so far) 4) Deadman Wonderland

Trigun was the anime that got me into anime when I watched it like.. 12years ago.
edit: Watched the first two episodes of Ao No Exorcist and I'm into it already. Hopefully it doesn't try to force to many stupid comedy parts.

I didn't find Ergo Proxy pretentious at all. In fact it is extremely rare for any fiction to be pretentious because they tend not to make claims or expressions as to their own worth. I say nothing about fans or discussions of it.
It didn't make a great impression on me because it: had languid pacing, had not enough character or plot depth to enrich 24 episodes, was mostly character driven but with an extremely limited persistent cast, too much episodic exploration of side narratives without enough relevance to the persistent cast, and generally not enough discovery and resolution.
Any pretensions, imagined or not, were not the issue and I actually think it would've been much better as 12 episodes with better pacing and a more interesting cast.
I guess I'll add Kara no Kyoukai and Kaiji to the recommendations for AfecksN.
Seriously though, the thread needs a more organized recommendation/toplist system.

I think a compilation of MAL would be decent but a good number of don't have/are too lazy to set up MAL.

Eh, still worth something. My id is waterfall (in case the sig didn't hint at that already :p)
As for Ergo Proxy, I think what most people object to (me included) is how the show will constantly reference stuff, but the references are absolutely meaningless. My favorite one was when the show starts referencing Aztec mythology, but the mythology has nothing to do with what's going on. It's just referencing stuff for the sake of making people feel special that they catch the references. At the same time, the show presents itself in a manner that indicates that it takes itself veeery seriously. With a serious show constantly referring to stuff, it's no surprise that fans try to see what the point is of a lot of the seemingly pointless parts of the show. The problem is, at least to me those parts of the show seemed genuinely pointless. Hence it is a show that strongly lends itself to a search for meaning that is inevitably futile.

I'll see if I can get un-lazy enough to continue working my MAL, I think I went about 20 before giving up.

the new season has soooooooo many new series...
I liked so far:
Hanasaku Iroha (slice of life) Toriko (FOODFIGHT)
and i am always searching for crazy comedy like:
Excel Saga FLCL Seto no Hanayome Baka to test to Shokanju Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt
or simple crazy like Needless or Gurren Lagann (both weak at the end but the first episodes are awesome), so if you feel i am missing something along these lines tell me xD
also for people who do not like the never ending shonen, you only have to draw a line, watch bleach up until episode 63 and treat this as the end, it is quite good that way!

Bleach up until the end of the Soul Society arc is just amazing. After that the Bounto arc begins and it's just beyond terrible.
Even today i find it hard to understand how that show when from one of the best animes ever to just the worst and most boring stuff. Shows get worse all the time but this was just such an insane shift in quality and it just happened over night.
New season shows:
Kaiji season 2 OnaHana [C] Money of Soul Possibility of Control
First i thought [C] was gonna be super awesome dark-thriller stuff and i was hyped. After the first trailer i thought it was gonna be yu-gi-oh/pokemon trash and i was bummed.
Then it turned out to pretty much be a pokemon/yu-gi-oh show but...different. At this point it doesn't seem like it's trying to market something at me. There is some fighting in the first 2 eps but the art is impressive enough for it to be fun too watch.
The critical factor is going to be (for me) how much they focus on the fighting and how much on the money part of it. On the one hand he is fighting with his side-kick monster thing and i don't care much for that. On the other hand he gets big dollars for winning fights and goes bankrupt if he loses.
If the fights aren't at the center of the show it might actually still be good. [C] is without a doubt something to keep an eye on. OnaHana is the best new show by miles. Kaiji still seems cool because the 1st season was so awesome but it's initial start hasn't been as good in the first 3 eps.

I didn't even see that wtf title EP2 came out.
