I'm kind of bothered by the fact that Gintama is a really overlooked series. It excels in nearly every possible aspect and despite its lengthy presence, it remains under the radar for most anime fans. I kind of don't get it. =/

+1.
Hitagi was one of the most entertaining anime characters to ever watch. I never got bored when she was on screen, she really is one of the most well-made/well-executed characters ever, personally.
Not to undermine the rest of the Monogatari cast, but Hitagi just towers so tall it's hard for any of them to really get out from under her overwhelming shadow.

No offense to IS advocates but wasn't IS inherently subpar to begin with?
I kind of don't get why the series is remotely likable, it's a pretty flat series personally.
|
It's not remotely likeable. 4chan and 2ch just bought the BDs so they could set record preorders for the lulz.
Edit: BTW if you ever want ragefuel just look at the MAL threads for IS.
Edit 2: WAKE UP! IT'S TWGOK DAY! :D
|
The somehow part is just pointing to how pathetically below the par IS was that I didn't think that it could get worse.
oh and to answer question from last page, yeah vol 7 is out. I haven't seen any scans though. However, it is a retardedly easy series to translate if people actually bother.
I think the thing that speaks the most about Gahara-san is that she actually only appears in less than half of the books and still remains my favorite character in the series.
Gintama is under the radar? Really? Weird for a series of such caliber. Maybe people just dismiss it because of the sheer amount of dirty jokes it has.

1. The show must have high spirited and/or incredibly stupid jokes and sillyness, like Naruto, Luffy, R. Zorro, Sousuke Segara (from Full Metal Panic) and Kamina (of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - a great recommendation i saw somewhere else on this forum). This criterion is absolutely essential.
2. The story should wrap up in any reasonable number of episodes. (max 50) But if it goes on and har high quality through out i dont mind it going on that much
3. I prefer animes that are historical/magic based/etc. over high tech/mech/etc.
4. Should be available to view online
To give you a pointer, these are the animes i like and dont like:
Like: One Piece, Naruto, Hunter X Hunter, (early) Full Metal Panic, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Cowboy Bebop, Great Teacher Onizuka
Dislike/Didnt find interesting/Mediocre: Bleach (after their first visit to Soul Society), Full Metal Alchemist, Death Note (even though i saw em all, it was pretty boring), The dark medival assassin guy that everybody seems to love - cant remember his name, but after 10 ep. it still didnt catch on, Elfen Lied, Soul Eater (after 10th episode), Hajime no Ippo (after around 40th episode) If you want recommendations, please don't say animes. Do you want to say Chineses? Anyway, as far as wacky stuff goes: Detroit Metal City is pretty wacky. It's also rather short so you can get it done in a snap and leave you craving for more. It doesn't take itself serious and it's just good fun overall. Yakitate Japan is a definite recommendation. It is a solid shounen comedy about baking bread. Yeah, that's what I thought. You're probably thinkinig it's either very boring or incredibly awesome. It's the latter. High on energy, super high on burning spirit. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is a weird crazy comedy with a lot of energy, but the style is very... peculiar. There're a lot of visual gags and entire episodes based on puns. You might think it's really boring. But I encourage you to watch the first two episodes to check out if you like it. If you do there're a few more comedies that are in the same style. A show I think you'll really like is Baccano!. It has a lot of characters and it just very cool and slick overall. It dances around the genres and shows you seem to like. Thanks for the great recommendation of animes ;P Seems like good suggestions, and i will check them out. I will henceforth also treat the word anime with the Respek that it behooves. Rabidch: Yes, wacky and perhaps somewhat energetic.
I suppose Fairy Tale is a good option I haven't seen the anime though, but I think it fits your criteria
Finished up all the arcs in Higuarshi no Naku Koro ni and finished the first arc of Kai Love every moment of it :>
Although, I'm still a bit confused on the obvious plot differences from the arcs but I don't really mind, it's still incredibly entertaining
VN takes up so much time... D:
|
VNs only take up a lot of time if you let every line tick to full with audio, otherwise you can proceed at a pretty smooth pace
You think Higurashi has plot differences? Wait till you see Umineko, Now that'll just freak you out.

Is the Umineko VN good? I saw the anime and didn't like it too much
and the GFX patches for Higurashi is so good I can't believe I went through the first 4 arcs without them Although, creepy Rena is creepier in the original I think + Show Spoiler +
I mean plot differences as in like the first three arcs are kind of similar but+ Show Spoiler + the fourth one was with the swamp and poison gas ending That wasn't mentioned at all or hinted at all in the first two and the fifth arc Not sure about the rest of Kai as I haven't started them yet
edit: I think the third arc had that ending if I believe correctly, so I guess the first two are similar and the latter two go together?
Or if I finish all of the answer arcs will it make more sense
|
Higurashi will make much more sense once you read through a bit of Kai, Umineko on the other hand won't make much sense even after you read through Chiru (in a way). The two are just fundamentally different in regards to how they approach the mystery elements in the works.
Umineko VN is much, much, much better than the anime. Anime butchered the best moments of the VN and gave us nothing in exchange basically.

Full Metal Alchemist was huge and everyone loved it, then comes around season 2 and people start hearing that the first season wasn't loyal to the manga and a legion of angry fans start calling it the worst show ever and that it's ending is bad (the part that was improvised, suprise suprise). Yeah, I definitely understand your frustration with this. I still consider the first season a good show, but in my opinion, it doesn't compare to Brotherhood. As far as direction of the show being ambiguous at times, I can see that, but I felt the overall plot was much better with all the explanations and history behind everything. Plus, I really loved how they ended it. Not in comparison to the other season, but rather compared to 99% other anime endings. Well, I respect your opinion and I'm in no way trying to say I'm right or you're wrong

Yeah she's pretty much one of my favorite characters of all time. I actually just rewatched Bakemonogatari between anime seasons and found I love her even more than before. Like you said, the rest of the cast is entertaining, but Hitagi is simply too amazing and takes the spotlight with every appearance. Still trying to get my friend to watch it; it's on his "to watch list" but it should be on his "watching list"

I think having closure/making sense is what I would prefer but I will give it a try :> After I finish with Higurashi of course
And while I'm at it, any anime to recommend this season/previous season Haven't watched anything recent other than Madoka lol

It styles itself as a parody gag anime, so the target group is more niche than the usual shounen crowd. To understand a lot of the jokes, people would have to be decently knowledgeable of the Meiji restoration period and the historic characters as well as contemporary Japanese pop culture that Gintama parodies. Not to mention that it doesn't go into shounen-mode until important arcs.

+ Show Spoiler [TWGOK 2-2] +I liked the date more in the anime than in the manga. Didn't really care for the fight since I don't like Kusunoki that much. Keima was epic as always.
NOW GIVE ME MY HAQUA NEXT WEEK.
Between this and Iroha, we're getting all the Itou Kanae we could ever want in a season~

Huh? Gintama is probably one of the top 5 most popular shows airing, since it started. It's not so popular in this thread, because it's not really to many of our tastes.

Gintama is not for everyone. It's full of sarcasm, parodies, and such that a lot of people might not understand. And even if they did understand it, it might just not be their cup of tea.
Gintama is one of my favorites, however. Love the series to death. This thread is too moefied though.

Have you never seen Macross Frontier? You should, even if the show does have its faults, its definitely worth a watch.
