Even the way he infiltrated Crocodile's organization so effortlessly seems foreshadowing that he has had some training in this type of operation before. I mean, it seems a pretty odd skill for a cook to have, but it totally fitting now that we know his complete backstory. If nothing else, I'm pretty sure Oda had the backstories of his characters at least roughly sketched out a LONG time ago. On May 06 2016 04:18 SkrollK wrote: Meh, don't think so. Coz when she gave the vivre card, her crew said that her mama was someone very important and powerfull in the new world (or smthg along this line). So it has to be big mom. Being a top lieutenant in Big Mom's organization definitely still qualifies as "very important and powerful." This would also give the Straw Hats a potential ally on the inside who would owe them a favor. I don't know, maybe some kind of favor like helping them escape with Sanji and risking Big Mom's wrath because they had helped save her daughter's life. This is the sort of thing Oda likes to do IMO.

You don't remember him faking his own death on the phone so that Crocodile would think he was talking to his underlings?

Yeah definitely, I was already discussing all this like 10 years ago with friends. Even when he was riding the train to Enies Lobby, there were more hints about all of this.

Back to the point though, Oda's stories are remarkable cohesive, and every new reveal usually has a substantial amount of evidence in past stories that fit together exactly as if they were made for it. If we assume it was all planned, this would not make him a better planner than many conventional authors who plan whole book series, but it does put him in the top tier of mangaka.

Then later on, we find out what those clues actually mean and how it all fits together. I'm not sure if it's still considered foreshadowing or not. It's at least something similar to foreshadowing, but more vague. Thus, his manga is open to a lot of different reasoned guesses, and to me that's actually part of the fun of reading One Piece, trying to guess what will happen next. The problem is that the clues are so vague that the guesses are almost always horribly wrong. Still fun to try and probably part of the reason why there is so much One Piece discussion out there. Like, a common theory is that Sanji has two older brothers. If you don't know why, try to figure it out. That one isn't too hard if you have some basic Japanese language skills. Also, for quite awhile, there was a theory that he was actually a prince. The "Only Alive" poster added a lot of fuel to that fire. Instead, it turned out that he was part of a major family in the underground. There were clues that his family was important, but not enough to reason out exactly why. So people came close, but it was very rare for people to actually hit the mark. This perfectly sums up why people are having these discussion all the time, please everyone read this.
