I think Oda deserves the benefit of the doubt.

He always thinks so far ahead and is always thinking of the bigger picture. I'm sure that X amount of chapters from now, you'll be kicking yourself for doubting him and praising him for his genius.

It would be nice to see a good tenryubito, but I doubt we'll see one as they've all gone mad with power. It's funny how there are "good" pirates in One Piece. Whitebeard seemed like a good person, but he probably raped and pillaged islands in his past. Or maybe some pirates make a living by hunting other pirates.

i usually give oda the benefit of the doubt, but all this information we already knew. the only thing that was worth knowing is the depth of the character fisher tiger. arlong, jinbe, how much deeper do we really know them now? not much. the whole luffy ace sabo flashback added a LOT of depth to the luffy ace relationship and a mystery regarding sabo in current times. so far this flashback does none of that, really.

Looks like the tenryubito didn't kill her, that was a false bait from Oda. Would have been too ordinary. I really like the Queen Otohime character a lot, you need someone like her to change shit. The tenryubito are good villains and I am curious why the Admirals actually protect them instead of just taking the power by themselves. I wonder what secret or power stands behind them.
The fact that Vander Decken has an ulterior motive for marrying Shirahoshi is also pretty cool, just so much stuff came together this chapter. Great job, Oda.

For Otohime's death, I'd say Vander Decken did it but tenryubito or Hodi are also very well possible.

Also, now I could very well image Shirahoshi joining the Straw Hats:

- very useful ability (commanding Sea Kings for Sea battles)
- fishwoman (was missing)
- trajic past

Overall this Arc is so incredibly awesome, just everything is perfect in this flashback so far.

The Queen got a treaty of some sort, but I'm guessing she would have had to give something up for it. Very possibly linked to her inevitable death.

Kubo is a natural genius when it comes to trolling. Oda is the calculating type of troll.

I think Van Der Decken will kill Otohime perhaps because of the treaty she got or maybe something to do with his desire for Shirahoshi and her powers. I don't feel that Hodi did it otherwise I think Jinbei and Hachi would have had too much of a grudge against him in the current time (unless her killer is unknown). As interesting as this flashback is, I really want to see Luffy destroy everyone already

As goofy as he is, I think Vander Decken is smart enough to know he would never convince someone to marry him if he killed their mom. Then he again, he throws lethal shit at Shirahoshi constantly so I guess he isn't exactly the picture of rational thought.

Another point in the Vander Decken/Hodi thing. Jinbe warned Luffy to not fight Hodi. He didn't give enough of a shit about Decken to even bother mentioning him.

Overall I'm enjoying the arc. Bit of a lack of strawhats at the moment, but since this is pretty much the best time to give merman lore it's an acceptable detour.
