Rosemary's baby

It's halloween time which means it's time to watch a horror classic! This year i chose Roman Polanski's milestone which is about a young couple, Guy and Rosemary, who move into a new apartment to start a new life together.
As the title of the movie already suggests, Rosemary gets pregnant but something about it seems off, the elderly neighbour couple they got friends with is a little too involved, guy's career suddenly gets a new boost, things just feel different than normal for rosemary.
This is by far the biggest strength of the movie, putting you in the shoes of rosemary, her struggle to stay sane, creating this dooming atmosphere. Sadly one scene imo gives a little too much away so the film didn't manage to really keep me guessing, some wasted potential on that part i think. The acting is also antiquated in parts, some might say it's simply "old school acting" and it probably is, but it also took me out of the story in some cases. (though overall it still works, it's by no means bad!)
The soundtrack is phenomenal, probably one of the biggest factors for the aforementioned atmosphere.
If you look below the surface of the main plot, the movie also comments on the role of the woman in this time (60s), not on your nose but pefectly woven into the story.
Would definitely recommend it to anyone, very good film!

I watched it last night too. It was so good. I thought there would be more drama with a scene like + Show Spoiler +
neighbours coming in through the secret door, menacing, dragging her off for the first time. But they keep up the veneer basically the entire time. The horror is kind of passive: her naivety and frailty, and also how everyone she trusts (almost) betrays her.

Another good movie I saw this week was Minding the Gap. It's up there with Crumb as one of the best documentaries, imo.

Oh yeah one would expect it to be more graphic/explicit, in a sense it is really more of a psychological thriller than a horror film. Though that is semantics because rosemary definitely feels the horror of the constant manipulation and betrayal. Cause we are in spoilers here, what did you think about the dream sequence? That is the part i meant when i said it showed a little too much. The movie kinda wants you to be in doubt as well, if she is crazy or not but i never really felt that it could be just in her mind tbh. Some small doubts at best.

Still a very good movie obviously, so would recommend it to basically anyone! (even people who don't watch horror usually)

You should go and know nothing going in. Just let that awesome, weird movie wash over you. If you need to see something about the film, watch the trailer. It is pretty indicative of what the movie has in store for you.

I think it was definitely not a dream. After that I didn't question her sanity. I think that made it more effective, because we know the full extent of the situation before she does, and it's hard to watch her make bad decisions over and over. Another scary part for me is how Dr. Hill sides with the satanists - as if the movie is trying to convince us that behaviour is base human nature, and we can't really trust anyone.

Antiporno

Not exactly sure what i watched here honestly. It's a movie about eccentricity, sexual freedom, the role of the woman in japan, voyeurism of cinema/art, self doubt, and other things but these are the crucial ones i think.
We follow Kyoko an artist and writer who lives in her one room atelier. She has her own assistant (an older woman) who she likes to humiliate, even when press is at her place. This power structure is a crucial part of the narrative and isn't as binary as first suggested though. We learn more about these two during flashbacks and other narrative tricks.
For anyone who already knows some of Sion Sono's other work it will come to no surprise that this one is also fairly weird, it's not the usual structure or presentation known through mainstream movies.

The acting of our lead is phenomenal, the cinematography is excellent, the use of color especially makes this movie a pleasure to watch. The runtime is really short so just check it out really

Inside out

This is a movie about emotions, the basic ones like joy, sadness, anger, disgust and fear get impersonifications which basically control human beings. There is a whole world inside anyone with memory data bases, a literal train of thought, etc.
We have two main characters in this film, joy and the kid she is living in, riley. Riley moves with her parents to a new place, the usual conflicts happen (new school, missing old friends, father has less time for her, etc) while on the inside joy and sadness have to go on a little odyssey to save riley.
It's a neat idea and it plays with its setting well, but ultimately the film doesn't manage to really bring anything new to the table, the characters are shallow and for a film about emotions it didn't really succeed in making me emotionally invested. Not up to par to the pixar classics.

Vertigo

In this hitchcock classic we follow a former police detective john ferguson who gets asked by a friend to follow his wife madeleine because she is behaving weirdly all of a sudden. John does this and during his work he starts to get interested in this woman himself.
I don't really wanna say a whole lot more about the plot but it definitely manages to keep you guessing, themes include obsession, female oppression but also love and trauma.
It's very well shot, with some breathtaking outdoor sceneries, the acting of our main cast is top notch (outside of the somewhat "oldschool" style ofc) and the writing is overall pretty good as well.
I have some small issues with the pacing and the ending in particular, i didn't love the film but it's definitelly still a recommendation for anyone.

i like Vertigo a lot. historically it's always been the most underrated Hitchcock. everyone hated it at the time (i hated it the first time i saw it) and it was only years later that promotion hounds like Scorsese talked it up to the pedestal it's on now. it has it's own rhythm going that is rather prohibitive (relentlessly plodding if you're not in the mood) but when it clicks with you almost every frame bowls you over. plus you gotta respect a film that is so unabashedly upfront about it's kinkiness (especially for 1958).

Just for clarification, i definitely agree that it was no dream, but my point is that this "dream sequence" shows too much which doesn't really allow the viewer so stay somewhat sceptical about her sanity. I think the film would have worked even better if one wouldn't be totally sure that she is in the right (more or less)

Memoirs of a geisha

Oh man this could have been so much more with the right decisions :/
First off, this is a story about a young japanese girl who gets sold to a geisha house and her struggles to become a geisha. The plot itself is fine, nothing super intricate but you get your dose of drama, romance, intrigue, etc. (i know that the depiction of the geisha life isn't historically accurate, but that's fine with me, it's a melodrama and it takes artistic liberties to tell the story)
Anyway, what's really amazing about this movie is the set design and cinematography, it just looks incredibly beautiful. This is by far the biggest strength of the movie and honestly the only reason why i would even recommend it, the world of pre ww2 japan it builds is spectacular.
Now comes the big problem though, for some reason they decided to get chinese actors and let them speak english. I wouldn't really care about them castign chinese instead of japanese (though why?), but the acting gets really stiff due to broken english in a lot of cases. That's not to say that the acting itself is even bad, they do a good job whenever they can work with facial expressions and body language, but a lot of the dialogue is just not on point.
The run time is also a little long for the story they tell, but that's a minor issue. I would still recommend checking it out, sadly this language problem really didn't allow me to get fully invested, but the aesthetics alone make it worth a try.

Monsters inc

After watching "inside out" the other day i had to make sure if my memory was indeed correct, if the pixar classics were actually better.
So i chose monsters inc for a rewatch and yes, it absolutely is.
It's a story about a monster society which gets their daily energy from the screams of human children. We follow two monsters, sulley and mike, who are the top employees of the "monsters inc" which specializes in harvesting the children's screams. One day a little girl gets into the monster world and stumbles right into the hands of our two protagonists, chaos ensures (human children are considered to be dangerous/toxic)
First of, the animation definitely aged badly at places which makes it a little harder to enjoy, thankfully the movie has a lot more to showcase than that though. The characters are simply fun and engaging, ofc they are still simple in their motivation, this is no character study, but they aren't as one dimensional as the characters in "inside out" by any means.
The relationship this movie builds between our two monsters and the little human girl is a joy to watch and might even bring you to tears.
This film is also pretty funny, the jokes work well, the timings are on point.
The third act is a little weaker than the rest, but still manages to bring the story to a satisfying conclusion. Definitely a recommendation, good movie!

I saw "Brawl in Cell Block 99"

Well, I was entertained troughout. Its very violent and feels a bit like a dark revenge comic. Its simple, it could do with a bit more fleshing out for the protagonists character - despite allready taking pretty long for this, something is missing... I actually liked Vince Vaughn in this.

7/10 but don't expect something deep.

If you have time to kill, go for it.

Arrival (2016)

I thought this was great. It has a very melancholy atmosphere and the sci fi concept was a good one. Lots of nerdy linguistics facts which I found interesting. The acting was really good, but the military, their actions and their characters were straight out of Hollywood cliche 101, which was the only downer for me.
Really nice visuals.

Not too many first contact movies better than Arrival.

The unrealistic sound of these propositions is indicative, not of their utopian character, but of the strength of the forces which prevent their realization.

Sure thing. The movie is about some american soldiers going into a french village that has been captured by germans and there are some experiments going on. The scenes in the whole movie were not good. The dialogues were mostly curse words. Basically the whole plot and acting was bad. Even if you do like movies like this, personally i like them, you wont enjoy it. The movie was a mess.

+ Show Spoiler +
some stupid things i didnt like that for me make differences in movies.
When the americans first reach the french village there are many german soldiers patroling it and you need to be very quiet when moving around. When at some point they rescue their comrade and he turns into a monster sort of thing they shoot the guy like 10 times and none of the german soldiers seem to hear anything and rush to the house.
