Pretty sad to waste such interesting historical material and acting talent. The flight scenes were intense but there are so many that it loses its impact, especially for the ending mission to the moon.

Do you attribute that to the script or Chazelle's direction? I was thinking about seeing it, but reception and reviews were lukewarm.

Maybe they all were humorless though.

Is there a better first contact movie than Arrival?

Are there any space movies that are better than 2001 and Interstellar?
The unrealistic sound of these propositions is indicative, not of their utopian character, but of the strength of the forces which prevent their realization.

In Interstellar's case there would be a lot if there were more "space movies" :D

I'm not a huge film buff so hard to say. I think both though. Sometimes it felt like vignettes strung together rather than one cohesive narrative. And the weakness in the writing really showed in the few scenes where people were supposed to be joking together and bonding. It was almost cringe worthy and it seems like even the actors felt embarrassed. The movie was deliberately all about Neil Armstrong and especially how he dealt with his daughter dying of illness. But we only see them together for like 10 minutes before she's dead and it's hard to feel any real connection there. And that's the whole explanation for him being a brooding, angsty workaholic. It just surprises me that a story so rich in inherent drama and emotion could be made into such a bland, colorless experience.

Pacific Rim

"This is a film about giant robots fighting giant monsters, just have a good time". People use this or similar comments a lot to defend obvious flaws in big blockbuster movies and pacific rim is just that. Yes you can tell that del toro likes the mecha genre, the design of both the monstrosities and mechas is great, the attention to detail here is somewhat impressive. Sadly everything else is a little bland, very generic characters in a very generic story. I didn't really connect to any of the protagonists, our two leads had no chemistry together, the film simply failed to create any emotional reaction from me.
The action looks great most of the time, but towards the end it also gets a little stale and boring, you only can do so much with basically the same fight over and over again.
It does its job better than transformers, but only marginally so in my opinion. Decent film, if you like the genre you can go for it, otherwise skipping it is totally fine.

5.5-6/10

The original Solaris is top tier, although a lesser Tarkovsky film in my opinion.

That's fair.
If we're going for 'proper' sci fi space movies, The Martian was one that I particularly enjoyed, but its nowhere near the level of 2001 or Interstellar.
Also, if Wall-E counts that was brilliant.

On another note, I saw Dark City again last night. How did that movie not get more of a following? Its really fucking good.

Only lovers left alive

In this vampire movie we follow adam and his wife eve, both hundreds of years old. Adam has a fairly depressed outlook on the world and humans (he calls them zombies). He philosophizes about them not appreciating their scientists and artist enough, unnecessary wars, etc. Sadly this comes off as fairly on the nose commentary of the director even if it is somewhat believable that basically immortal beings could develop such an outlook, at the same time so can edgy 18-30 year olds
There really is no plot in this movie, we just spectate both vampires in their daily life, which mostly conists of getting some blood (peacefully!), enjoying some music (adam is a musician, pretty good soundtrack!) and the general smalltalk about art, culture and basic philosophy. So yeah some might find this boring, but what the movie really excells at is creating a very special, eerie atmosphere the viewer cannot escape from. Both leads are great (tom hiddleston and tilda swinton), the cast in general is impressive and acts on a high level.
If only the dialogue would have been a little more sophisticated than name dropping some artists and scientists, then this could have been even better than merely "good"

I saw that one already, imo the better movie (well hard to compare, one being a comedy) So far my favorite vampire movie is still "thirst" i think.

Rosemary's baby

It's halloween time which means it's time to watch a horror classic! This year i chose Roman Polanski's milestone which is about a young couple, Guy and Rosemary, who move into a new apartment to start a new life together.
As the title of the movie already suggests, Rosemary gets pregnant but something about it seems off, the elderly neighbour couple they got friends with is a little too involved, guy's career suddenly gets a new boost, things just feel different than normal for rosemary.
This is by far the biggest strength of the movie, putting you in the shoes of rosemary, her struggle to stay sane, creating this dooming atmosphere. Sadly one scene imo gives a little too much away so the film didn't manage to really keep me guessing, some wasted potential on that part i think. The acting is also antiquated in parts, some might say it's simply "old school acting" and it probably is, but it also took me out of the story in some cases. (though overall it still works, it's by no means bad!)
The soundtrack is phenomenal, probably one of the biggest factors for the aforementioned atmosphere.
If you look below the surface of the main plot, the movie also comments on the role of the woman in this time (60s), not on your nose but pefectly woven into the story.
Would definitely recommend it to anyone, very good film!

Thirst was really good (I assume you mean the Korean movie). In this matter I am also a big fan of 30 Days of Night (not sequels) and the new Fright Night (not the sequel though). They are really cool on the campy side of the spectrum
