Kind of a weak ep though + Show Spoiler + The acting was superb. The actors' facial expressions matching their griefs. Arya separating from a friend, and Lady Catelyn's loss of her father and her two sons.
The realistic portrayal of rape was chilling - the way Brienne was screaming at the top of her lungs, or the way Theon pled woefully against it.
The way Podrick is rewarded for his service .. well, it doesn't need to be said. Fuckin' awesome, literally. I suspect that the whores were secretly instructed to return the gold, to boost Pod's confidence. The way they acted overly surprised was pretty suspicious, especially when they asked for details.
And of course, the ending with Roose Bolton cutting off Jaime's hand. Epic acting skills, the look of surprise on Jaime was perfectly done.
The overarching theme was manipulation - with Robb trying to manipulate the Mountain into a trap, but Edmund blotches the plan by being impatient; was for justice. Tyrion manipulating Pod to help him become more confident, an act of gratitude and goodwill. Vargo pretending to be on Jaime's side; manipulating for pure pleasure of it.
And that's pretty much off the top of my head - I did have to look up some names like Vargo and Podrick, for Pod.
FUCKING AWESOME EPISODE
I'm pretty sure that's a new character, not Roose Bolton. From my understanding Roose Bolton is the guy that said to Rob in the first episode "I have my best hunter after [Jamie]".
It's Roose Bolton's bastard son.

Really great episode. Think it's been too long since that "anything can happen" feel.

Locke is the name of the dude who chops Jamie's hand off.

Game of Thrones is a great show and this is was great episode. But there is an inextricable march of plot that can be tiring. There's something depressing about so many good performances that get these 2 minute window to develop their characters. If you combine all of Cirian Hinds scenes as Mance Rayder, do we maybe 200 words of dialogue? I watched Mad Men right after this, it's a stark (kekekeke) difference in character development.
DB Weiss and David Benioff are nothing if not slaves to the novels. For both good and bad.

DB Weiss and David Benioff are nothing if not slaves to the novels. For both good and bad. Mad Men has 4-6 different actors. Don, Peggy, Pete, and Roger. Everyone else is just their hanger on. Game of Thrones has literally three times as many main characters and then their respective hangers on. Totally different. But I agree that as the different people continue to do different things, the show will inevitably continue this 2 minutes for everyone stuff and it deteriorates in quality simply because there are too many great characters with great lines and most of them wont get shown.

well, characters need to meet up so we have less locations to follow, tbh. i think it will happen eventually. just think we're in a time of transition. maybe not.

Yeah, I wasn't saying I wanted Game of Thrones to be Mad Men. I don't have that expectation, it's a different story. I'm not even sure that Game of Thrones will suffer in quality.
I just wanted to say that it's interesting how two very quality shows (Mad Men the superior of the two from a television perspective,) can be very different. You might say that Mad Men has the tendency to get too introspective and burdened with second meaning - this can get as exhausting as watching dudes ride around on horses in the north, the in the south, then across the ocean - it's just different.

I was just saying that the reason you feel that way is because Mad Men can afford to devote 10-30 minutes per major character. Imagine how youd feel about mad men if Don or Roger only had as much time on as Kenny.

God that song came from no where hahah, I had no idea that was actually meant to be in the show until I recognized the lyrics.

Yes, of course. That was my point. The creators of Game of Thrones clearly want to push their plot forward - this is why there's so much exposition in the form of speeches and people walking to other places, and also they like to sprinkle in fan service. This is fine, of course, but it makes the scenes like Catelyn's contemplation disappointingly rare.
The immediate response is, "They only have 10 episodes and 50 minutes per episode." But that's the showrunner's job. Stannis is broken because he lost a battle 5 episodes ago. We've seen him for maybe 5 minutes. Where's his rumination? Where's his smoldering? We can't get a lot of that - all we know about him is that he's stubborn, driven and slightly off kilter. Everything else is left to the actor to convey in his time on screen - which, as we already noted, is scarce.

Great episode and big wtf moment for the credits but I'm happy to be able to put aside my knowledge of the books. If I was a rabid fan I'd probably get frustrated so many stuff are different.
Gladly, I'm able to enjoy both. I wonder sometimes however if the show is not a bit too hard to follow without any book knowledge with all those characters and names thrown without a lot of exposition.
