Don't call yourself a fantasy lover if you haven't read A Song of Ice and Fire.
Get going. It's not going to read itself!

I started reading the series 2-3 weeks ago when I first saw this thread. I'm on a Feast for Crows now. So far, it's been good. But damn is this series dark. I think Martin might be a little a generous with the tragedy.

i think it's great, I really cant see this Harry Potter like two dimensional fantasy stuff anymore. Because really nothing beats "Lord of the Rings" in that field.

Don't get me wrong, I like a dark story as much as anyone else. However, must EVERY main character suffer some horrible tragedy? I can't think of one main character who has not suffered at least one of the following: 1) been maimed (Martin definitely loves the maiming), 2) been betrayed or shunned by someone close, 3) died, 4) sold off/given to some horrible spouse, or 5) lost close family members (this one applies to pretty much everyone).

Can't f'fing wait! I read the first book bout 3 years back, and thought I found it a slow read at first, boy o boy a I glad I stuck around. Finished Feast of Crows last year and am now eagerly awaiting Dance with Dragons and this HBO series. Martin is one of the greatest fantasy writers of all time. His books are such a pleasant blend of fantasy and re-written history, blended together with a dark realism that is masked so often in so many other fantasy books. GG to Martin!

That is something that gives characters depth, even in less dark fantasy. Characters must have some kind of obstacle or suffering to overcome, otherwise they're quite boring/shallow.

And one of SoI&F's defining characteristics was its ubiquitous use of rape, incest, and over the top blood baths. What's the point if they're going to water down the very things that make HBO and SoI&F interesting? I remember reading SoI&F for the first time and finding it highly amusing the way Daenerys and her brother got on, the fact she was a little girl getting humped by Drogo, and that rape was occurring all around her nearly 24/7. Not that I seek out those types of things, but GRRM had a charming way of depicting it without me actually caring about the victims. Probably because he kept them faceless victims and casual usage made me desensitized. Hmm...
One of the main reasons they gave for doing this is because it's easier to find actual actors, do you really want child actors? They can't work child actors as long either so its probably better this way.

I won't start reading either since it seems the last book will never be written soon.

While I hope that GRRM gets his shit together sometime in the near future, you may be right that it won't be written soon. However, the series is worth reading even if the next book never comes out (god forbid).

It starts 15 min before the season final episode of The BoardWalk Empire.
Getting hyped FFS! I hope it will be at least half as good as the books.
