~~~ I liked this episode overall -- frankly the first episode of the season i actually enjoyed -- but I was still annoyed by some things. They keep hitting us over the head with exposition on the plot. Seconds before an ambush...tarly talks about a potential ambush. He also makes sure to mention all the golds in, blah blah. Bad dick pun. Armourless horses and men charging a pike line... Small things but really, pretty avoidable as well. It would of been easy to do a kick ass battle without the added absurdity of horses charging an armoured pike line. I'm also worried about the jon and danny story line. Danny is overtly...OVERTLY insane. I was hoping for some subtlety, but when you point out that ice demons are coming to wipe out hundreds of thousands of people and destroy the world, and the reaction you get it is 'haha ill help if you bow'...that aint subtle. Even stranger was that jons reaction wasnt shock and disgust, as literally any normal persons reaction would of been, he actually seems to like her. It seems to me that the writers are trying to do two things at once, but lack the talent or the time to do it (probably both) 1) Make jon and danny hook up 2) Show that danny is losing her mind gradually But theres no subtlety, so it isnt believable. At this point im just waiting for someone to put a shiv in dannys back, because shes clearly batshit insane. Every. Single. Line.
It seems pretty reasonable for me that Dany wants a united 7 kingdoms to face the white walkers rather than fight two wars at once.
It explicitly references Littlefinger's conversation with Varys following his starting of the war, if I recall correctly. That's Bran saying "I know what you did last summer". He can't not know, the line wouldn't make sense. Bran's visions are still limited, he need either animals or specific tree, he can't know everything
By the time a horse hits the spear its momentum will carry it strait through the shieldwall. The first wave will die but completely shatter the formation after which the soldiers are doomed. You can swim in plate armor. Maybe due to RPG games balancing issues and "heavy armor" and "light armor" skills a lot of people have wrong impressions about plate armor. They typically only weighed something around 25kgs (modern soldiers carry a lot more) and knights were still very mobile in them being able to swim, jump, climb etc. The heaviest part of the equipment was the mail shirt underneath the plate armor which I am not sure Jaime even wears. However seeing as Jaime only has one hand left to swim, he might need to be saved by Bronn =)
They have survival instinct. Horses were used to charge inbetween lines and cut down retreating men, or alternately, you had to blind a horse to get it to a charge an actual fixed position. In reality they would be slaughtered whole sale, and the horses would stop mid charge and try to turn around. It was stupid.Its not a pike line tho, they are short spears. I think Stark reunion was nice and cold just as expected. Tearjerk moments would've been totally out of place. These people have completely lost their innocence. Sansa must be like holy shit im the 6 year abuse and rape victim and I'm the most normal one here. Uber Arya vs Brienne wasn't so bad either. Clearly B was holding back and totally surprised. In the end you saw she stopped playing and the fight went quite different. Perhaps a foreshadowing of how B will end up having to fight A for real to protect Sansa or something? Curious where their stories will go.
He has the best response to LF's "chaos is a ladder" pitch in this scene btw. "You say that as if you were the first man to ever think it."
Also, why didn't Dany ride her dragon along the front line of spearmen (or pikemen, whatever), instead of perpendicular to? She could have done way more epic Firebat damage to the marines that way. And I think it's most acceptable to assume Bran is still downloading a lot of data, and can see bits here and there, but the history folder isn't RAM.
Well the guy himself says that is is feasible that someone with more training could properly swim in it. While I don't know any European source, swimming in plate armor was part of normal samurai training. While Japanese plate armor weights slightly less than European ones, they have worse weight distribution. Notice the technique is very different to the crawl the guy in the vimeo video tried, and he doesn't even have to use his hands so he could continue fighting in the water.
