And later on, we find out Gaara's sand shield was really his mother's love (feminine symbol). So in a way isn't Gaara's shield like a woman's love/chastity/vagina, which was then pierced by Sasuke's violent intent, resulting in Gaara being wounded for the first time (first love/heartbreak) which made him go berzerk and go on a rampage to destroy the village (symbol of destroying the home/domestic bliss).

I must think on this. It is all very significant.

As Sasuke's sharingan evolved, he grew more and more blind to the world around him. Juxtaposed with the evolution of his sharingan was the devolution of his character from semi-cool emo dude to whiny little bitch.

After his death they were implanted into Sasuke, I can't see how that would mean he keeps them.
