^ This. I remember the Hobbit being a 250-page book we read in primary school lol. Will be interesting to see how they make it into 3 movies

How can this be 3 films when the entire lotr trilogy is like at least 3 times longer?

Well from the previous thread (my one regret about locking the other one is losing the other conversations.)

I honestly think that you could have made 10 movies out of LotR easily, so I don't see why three would be too much for the Hobbit. So much incredible stuff was still missing from LotR. Not sure about the storylines and arcs I'm not too concerned with those. If the arc is missing I will just treat it like a series in the cinema, but honestly these people are too good to have arcs missing so I'll just take it as it comes.

If you look at Game of Thrones as a comparison even a full season of broadcasting is not enough to accurately describe the books, storylines, and scenery. Basically, if done well, I think you can almost created unlimited TV/movie content out of books this good. I have no issue with three movies at all, it's just a matter of being good enough to do it. They have proven their skills so I will give them the benefit of the doubt until I see them.

I'm a MASSIVE LotR fan, despite never finishing The Hobbit. I'll keep my faith in Peter for now, and be happy there is three films. As others have said (and Nazgul summed up well in a quote above) even though the Hobbit will be a trilogy like LotR, it means it will be truly fleshed out and done justice. LotR could have easy been many more movies, dozens of hours of more content and just as good as it already was.

Very excited.

So a director with little sense of pacing is going to adapt a short lively exciting novel into a 9-hour tunnel ? Why in the name of god must poor Tolkien endure this... :-(

Rather fitting I think. A lot of modern readers have a hard time with Tolkien's pacing in LotR's. But I think overall it's good. Tolkien hoped to create a mythology for Britain and movies are a part of that (a long with all the art and music that has been created out of LotR's.)

I believe between 2001-2003 25 million copies of LotR's were sold, 15 million in English so the books are getting read because of the movies. I just hope it was done because the story was dense and they have good plans for 3 solid story arcs.

The Hobbit and LoTR are very very different books. Their pacing and tone are completely different I fear another trahison of the spirit of Tolkien's work, like the LoTR movie trilogy already was.

A trilogy now?

Well, the more content the better I suppose. It sounds like they want to include transition material between the hobbit and LOTR. I don't know how I feel about that, wouldn't that mess with the timing of the climax? Will just have to wait and see how it all turns out I guess. But for now, I'm feeling reserved excitement.

interesting to see people being skeptical about drawing the book out into 3 movies, since usually the biggest critique about the movies from the book readers is that too much of the details of the story were left out. Yes, the Hobbit wasn't even that long, but I really enjoyed the extended versions of the LOTR series so I have faith they will do a fantastic job

EDIT: posted this before I saw this:

100% also in agreement with Nazgul.

the people complaining about the hobbit being a trilogy instead of a single movie, are the same people who complain when movies leave stuff out of the film that was in the book.

apparently they want more story in less time. (good luck with this lol)

sidenote...

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED!!!!! cant wait for these my ONLY negative aboutt he trilogy = i have 3 excruciatingly long waiting periods where i will be counting down the days til release lol.

how any1 could complain about having too much film time given to the hobbit is mindblowing imo
like complaining about being given too much money

I am happy about 3 parts I just hope they have the film content to back it up and not just did it out of financial reasons.

Considering The Hobbit was a much more short book than the LoTR trilogy, I wonder if its necessary to make three films. I'm a huge fan, but maybe the films will be way too slow, and I can agree LoTR films missed some essential bits of the books such as the Tom Bombadil bit, but... I just hope they make it right, it would be such a shame.

This looks like overall it is going to be a lot more relaxed and slower paced than the lord of the rings. Not a bad thing I think, but I am guessing that if people go into it expecting something very simmilar they will be dissapointed.

Well why would they expect the same lol. Lets not forget The Hobbit =/= LoTR, I'd imagine people that didnt read The Hobbit getting dissapointed it's not similar to LoTR, but even on the most basic things they are completley different types of writting, lets not forget Tolkien wrote The Hobbit for his sons as a night read book.

Well it's not three movies from the Hobbit, it's three movies from the Hobbit plus what we know of events occurring in the background of the story (Council, Gandalf in Mirkwood/Tower etc), plus events in the LotR appendices. I think there is enough material for three movies, certainly. It's more a matter of to what extent they can carve compelling narratives/narrative arcs out of the raw "historical" material.

Given their track record they should do alright I imagine. As with LotR, it won't be the books in cinematic form, it will be their own "original retelling". But that's legitimate.

I think/hope they will be integrating large portions of the Silmarillion into these movies. They can use all this extra time to give us the full back story on Gandalf and the wizards, the whole tale of the Elves and the Dwarves, and the ancient Men, etc.

The hobbit has many portions of the story where they simply sit around and have "story time" or a tale gets told by so and so. They can drop in some of the tales of the ancient characters here and there and make an interesting go of it. That doesn't mean these movies will be fast paced and free from that oft-criticized meandering that showed up in the LotR films, but as a fan of the works, I don't really care. The more of the world they can bring into the screen, the better.
