At first I read it weekly but then I got bored of it and quit. Later came back and got caught up, thought it wasn't bad, but it got annoying pretty quickly now.

the only time dbz manga ever did this was during frieza arc, and frieza never really tried to do that (he just went like "oh i'm only using 20% of my power"). dbz never really pulled off power ups out of their ass if you actually... watched it (there was always some sort of reason behind them, no one hid it over and over to this ridiculous level -_-) like they didn't stretch the power ups like this at all and the power ups (kaioken/ssj) was much better pulled off.

Actually, just remembered. Sabertooth was not the strongest guild in Fiore. The other guilds weren't sending out their best. Lamia Scale nor Pegasus never sent out their strong members and still managed to get right behind Sabertooth. I don't think Bachus competed for Cerberus either until he saw his team losing badly and Erza. Then there's also the fact that Kagura never tries at these competitions, and I don't think Sabertooth has anyone close to the same level as her.

It's pointless to overthink, but I'll probably do it anyways.
Bacchus and Elfman had a hell of a fight, and considering that as of now, Elfman is still lying in a hospital bed injured, it is possible that Bacchus has not completely recovered his full strength either during the fight against Blue Pegasus.
Furthermore, people underestimate Ichiya, for obvious reasons. For all his silliness, he is a very powerful mage, and Erza did say earlier in the arc that Ichiya was Blue Pegasus' strongest (or one of the strongest) mages, prompting Natsu to declare that he wanted to fight Ichiya.
Back on topic though: Natsu's power is super variable and if I were to make a SC2 reference, he's kind of like a 2012 MVP. One moment he's good but not great, but sometimes he just pulls out miraculous performances out of nowhere and wins a GSL (or beats Jellal, Zero, etc).

Pretty sure that was before they went to do that special training and got epix power up. Not to mention even before the the current arc, back when Natsu vs Hades - Hades literally got a flawless victory against FT's Master, and then suddenly Natsu beats Hades.

Natsu didnt KO Hades, Hades had all his power kept in a secret machine thing and it got destroyed so he lsot all his power
also Erza fought on equal level with Phantoms guild leader who was one of the 10 wizard saints, Laxus is stronger then Erza and Gildarts is stronger then him
S-class is on par with the Wizard saints

I think that is one of the main (albeit cheesy) themes of the manga though: Power is derived from friendship, companionship, love, etc etc. while distinctions like S-ranks are relatively less important.
I think perhaps Azuma put it best when talking about Fairy Tail and Natsu in particular: On paper, they might not be that strong, but they draw strength from the bonds they have with one another. Faith into swords, if you will.
