After having seriously looked at the recommendations on this list I have to say that this thread is going to be better for my movie watching experiences to come than a standard 'list your favourite films' thread. After having been shocked and appalled by the lack of actual quality in recent big films (Sherlock Holmes and Avatar were so derivative and poor imo) I'm in serious need of some great viewing.
PS the scandinavian guy hit the nail on the head about K-Pax, it may be cheesy and have gotten fairly low ratings, but it is a film that really provides a sort of euphoric sense of wonder and transcendental satisfaction, as well as being extremely compelling throughout; heavily due to Kevin Spacey's unbelievably fluent performance.
I have to download about 10 films right now!!! Especially going to rewatch Road to Perdition. Have seen it thrice already, each time it got way better. Tom Hanks is amazing in that. And +1 to the guy who said Joan of Arc...although he meant 'the messenger'. I was actually pretty unimpressed by Milla Jovovich's acting, but I just find the story of Joan of Arc so incredible, and the film tells it well. Dustin Hoffman as 'maybe god' is brilliant in that film.
Another slightly imperfect but nonetheless compelling film I figure should be appreciated more is this little gem: + Show Spoiler +
Don't think that counts as a blockbuster, forgive me if it does. To the guy who posted Shawshank Redemption...COME ON!
PS ppl should check out this film adaptation of an amazing play:
And here's a western with some heart and great drama, plus Gregory Peck AND Charlton Heston on top form...with a theme that got my head turning about interpersonal relationships and the need to prove oneself to other people. Also picked it up at the £1 store so I thought it was a good price for such a cool film. (Too bad I couldn't say the same for 'True Grit', which is a shocking film no one should ever spend time to see): + Show Spoiler +
although it might have done well in the box office, I'm not sure
Pholon are you referring to the 1957 original of 12 angry men or the remake of 1997? Although the remake wasn't bad at all I somehow felt it lacked something the original did have.
I fully agree with Gattaca and Adam's apples as being good movies. They both let you think about aspects of humanity. They aren't top notch movies but both are underapreciated imo. Pi is also not a bad movie but not that interesting as a whole, although it has some very good scenes.
I will check out Primer and Berlin Calling soon. Both seem interesting. First however I need to watch Un Prophete and Agora. I already have both but didn't have the time yet to watch them.
And to end this post some more must see movies.
Benny & Joon (with imo one of the best roles of Johnny Depp)
Le Grand Bleu (the big blue, set in the world of free-diving. beautiful soundtrack and camerawork. one of my all time favorites but rather slow) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Grand_Bleu Please watch the European version or the Directors cut. The American version has a different (happier) ending and a new soundtrack for the American public (European version is available in both English and French (both spoken by the actors themselves). Personally I prefer the English version).
Mongol I don't know if it really qualifies as an "unknown" movie but it's definitely worth seeing if you haven't already done it.
Avalon Set in a world where the line between gaming and living is blurring. What is real and what isn't. The movie has more layers as (for most) meet the eye at first glance. Made by the director of Ghost in the Shell. (the movie is in Polish. couldn't find an English trailer so a French one will have to do)
Brother Yakuza come to America. Story luckily doesn't follow the standard hollywood concept.
I could go on and on but this is all you get from me for now.

I saw that one in the movie theatre and I was blown away...
If you're going to watch Funny Games, please, please watch the original. Michael Haneke is my favourite director, the movie is a shot for shot remake, but the atmosphere created by the actors just isn't the same IMO. Tim Roth is a good actor, but Ulrich Mühe is an _amazing_ actor.
Watch the original. Also watch "The Lives Of Others" to see Ulrich Mühe at his best, and watch the rest of Haneke's films because they're all awesome.
Gritty fight club-esque violent korean film about a guy who mysteriously gets locked in a room for a chunk of his life and swears vengence upon escape/release. Pretty unique and interesting fight scenes. Very avant garde. Features a scene at a LAN party where you can hear asian kids playing starcraft in the background.
The Room by Tommy Wiseau is such a bad film, that its an art. Its supposed to be a drama-type film, but its more comedy than anything else. I cant quite describe it in words, so ill just post the trailer:

hahah I dont know why that's a reason to watch the movie
I stumbled upon this years ago when I was about 17 and it was on at like 12:30am. I fell in love with it.
It's about 5 college kids who all have a saturday detention. They are all extremely different and they interact with each other very differently but they end up learning things from each other. It's also funny in a dry way (its a drama).
There is the Bully, the Jock, the Nerd, the Beauty queen and the Freak. Also the teacher who plays another main character.. and thats it!
Really good if you want something really light to watch and dont want to get too into it.
Has anyone else seen this? Did you like it as much as I did?
^ LOL, yes I liked it as much as you did and I also stumbled on it when I was just randomly surfing through different channels few years back. Glad to have seen it.
Edit: edited it to "^" instead of quoting the whole thing. me stupid. >.<
haha, that movie "zoo" is specifically about Mr.Hand for anyone who was wondering. He's the guy who videotaped himself having sex with a horse, had his colon punctured, and died.
