and the Above n Beyond show in Shanghai was pretty good, they played teardrop, punk, breaking 2night, home, formula rossa, rebound, contrast, from the earth, sun moon, on a metroday and finished off with sirens of the sea. was a great night. ripped down their promo posters and ran out of the club with 2 security dudes chasing me haha
Yea that looks just like Kang Min... amazing game sense... and uses mind games well, but has the micro of a washed up progamer.

I think at the beginning of his career he used to experiment with electronic sounds with huge success. These tracks were spinned by all the major DJs. Only later he became more mainstream.

I personally really like when producers experiment with sounds. Otherwise, after a couple of years of listening to trance everything mainstream starts to sound boring and generic. I have been listening to trance for 7 years now and I have to say that I don't enjoy it as much as before 2007 when its audience was smaller. To be honest, the most famous DJs nowadays sound quite commercial to me...


I absolutely love This Is That and most of the Northern Lights album to begin with. A lot of the songs on that album have similar starts/lead ins. I actually like most of what Gareth has produced probably up until 2010ish and I do agree that experimenting is a good thing, as most trance now a days is pretty generic and boring. Take for example beatports trance top 100, but producers can take experimenting a bit too far, although it's all subjective, as most music is.

I myself have been listening to EDM for the most part since 2000-2001. Although I seriously got into the scene around 2007ish. I do agree that trance productions have declined in the last 3-4 years. Although the trance scene has seen that happen before. I'm seriously hoping this whole electro and dubstep phase that's going on, makes trance more underground, which will help improve the quaility of tracks imo.

I've spent a few hours just skimming through the music in this thread and not much of it has been to my taste. To generalize, much of it hasn't been fluctuating a lot and that's the kind of music I like; good beats and energetic flow. Also, could anyone tell me what genres I'm listening to right now since it is really hard for me to classify tracks to specific genres and subgenres.

What I'm looking for is something more melodic and engaging. Could anyone point some more obscure good tracks for me?

Yeah sorry for not making myself clear, I listen to mainstream electronic artists, such as SHM, Avicii, Skrillex, Justice etc. so those songs and artists I showcased are more obscure compared to them.

I also hope that this whole dubstep mania will make trance more underground. What I don't like about the current trance scene that most of the producers/DJs forgot about their roots and produce/play only what they think is most popular.

And there is an additional stardom effect. The best example is GDJB where for some time people can vote for they favorite track of the show which is then played next week. I can't remember a time when the track that won wasn't either: (1) produced by Markus Schulz, (2) remixed by Markus Schulz, (3) during the show Markus said that he loves that track. I mean really?? Markus Schulz is one of my favorite DJs and I've been following him since I started listening to trance but a lot of his productions recently are subpar. And how come people always like the tracks that he likes?

Similar thing happened with Armin van Buuren...

Before trance I've been listening to drum and bass. I was then in London, an excellent place if you're into that music. But then I got bored with it and discovered Rank1 and Markus Schulz and I switched completely to trance (and house).

I don't listen/catch GDJB very much anymore, since it comes on at 9 am my time and that's exactly when I'm getting into the swing of my job and the times I do manage to remember and catch the show, I don't pay much attention to the songs unfortunately. Wish I could find the time though and pay attention more often, as Markus Schulz is still my favorite DJ. I would say in general though that most radio shows aren't that great anymore and most track of the weeks are something the DJ produced or has endorsed, which is just the way it is now with how the listeners vote.

I wouldn't say most of his productions are subpar, as I like most of the Dakota album and the Do You Dream album wasn't too bad, although was full of vocals. I would say though Markus is a much better DJ then producer, as I've seen him live at least 7 times, 2 of which were 6 1/2 hour sets this year, and haven't been disappointed once.

And actually, Another You Another Me was so huge when it was released... It is one of my favorite tracks of all time. The drop and then the beat is so damn powerful...

Another track by Gareth Emery that sounds electronic especially the drop is: Gareth Emery - This Is That (Five AM). Another huge hit from the past.

I think at the beginning of his career he used to experiment with electronic sounds with huge success. These tracks were spinned by all the major DJs. Only later he became more mainstream.

I personally really like when producers experiment with sounds. Otherwise, after a couple of years of listening to trance everything mainstream starts to sound boring and generic. I have been listening to trance for 7 years now and I have to say that I don't enjoy it as much as before 2007 when its audience was smaller. To be honest, the most famous DJs nowadays sound quite commercial to me...


I absolutely love This Is That and most of the Northern Lights album to begin with. A lot of the songs on that album have similar starts/lead ins. I actually like most of what Gareth has produced probably up until 2010ish and I do agree that experimenting is a good thing, as most trance now a days is pretty generic and boring. Take for example beatports trance top 100, but producers can take experimenting a bit too far, although it's all subjective, as most music is.

I myself have been listening to EDM for the most part since 2000-2001. Although I seriously got into the scene around 2007ish. I do agree that trance productions have declined in the last 3-4 years. Although the trance scene has seen that happen before. I'm seriously hoping this whole electro and dubstep phase that's going on, makes trance more underground, which will help improve the quaility of tracks imo.



I also hope that this whole dubstep mania will make trance more underground. What I don't like about the current trance scene that most of the producers/DJs forgot about their roots and produce/play only what they think is most popular.

And there is an additional stardom effect. The best example is GDJB where for some time people can vote for they favorite track of the show which is then played next week. I can't remember a time when the track that won wasn't either: (1) produced by Markus Schulz, (2) remixed by Markus Schulz, (3) during the show Markus said that he loves that track. I mean really?? Markus Schulz is one of my favorite DJs and I've been following him since I started listening to trance but a lot of his productions recently are subpar. And how come people always like the tracks that he likes?

Similar thing happened with Armin van Buuren...

Before trance I've been listening to drum and bass. I was then in London, an excellent place if you're into that music. But then I got bored with it and discovered Rank1 and Markus Schulz and I switched completely to trance (and house).



I don't listen/catch GDJB very much anymore, since it comes on at 9 am my time and that's exactly when I'm getting into the swing of my job and the times I do manage to remember and catch the show, I don't pay much attention to the songs unfortunately. Wish I could find the time though and pay attention more often, as Markus Schulz is still my favorite DJ. I would say in general though that most radio shows aren't that great anymore and most track of the weeks are something the DJ produced or has endorsed, which is just the way it is now with how the listeners vote.

I wouldn't say most of his productions are subpar, as I like most of the Dakota album and the Do You Dream album wasn't too bad, although was full of vocals. I would say though Markus is a much better DJ then producer, as I've seen him live at least 7 times, 2 of which were 6 1/2 hour sets this year, and haven't been disappointed once.


You're right. His Dakota productions are actually pretty good. But I don't like most of his production under Markus Schulz name. I still think he is an excellent DJ and is still my favorite DJ but I don't enjoy his style that much anymore. The tracks under his Dakota alias has this "old coldharbour" taste and that's why I really like them .

Just thought I should mention for those of you who haven't caught on yet, the Tron soundtrack (Daft Punk) is fucking dope.
Tron Legacy Reconfigured (remixes by awesome producers) is even cooler.

I definetly know what you guys are on about with trance releases dropping in quality a bit, but when you do hear that quality tune it doesnt half take you there.
