That was before I heard their 2013 release, The Formulas of Death. I have to say, I am genuinely surprised that this has received as little attention and praise at it has, because it's pretty fucking excellent. The band's progress and evolution is indisputable, their songwriting and execution has grown a lot. Now, it was a bit of a shock to see a fairly generic, if energetic gory death-thrash band release a new album that multiple people went on to label "psychedelic death metal". Whether or not this tag is accurate is subjective, but what I will say is that they take a much more atmospheric approach to the whole thing, including undistorted, often effect-laden guitar interludes (seamlessly, it does not in any way feel forced) and just a bigger focus on atmosphere than riffs in general. Which is weird, because the riffs that they conjure on this album are more interesting and fresh than the ones on their previous outings (2009's The Horror and past demos). There's also a bit of a black metal influence to be felt, mostly through some trem riffs and blast beat passages here and there, as well as the production. I'd say they also take a page out of the books of bands like Incantation and more recently stuff like Grave Miasma and Obliteration, and their music benefits greatly from it. It's excellent, probably one of the best releases of 2013, which is saying a lot. If there's one qualm most people would have with it, it's that the album is 75 minutes long. Personally, it never felt dragged out or boring at any point, but I can see why some people may not want to sit through the whole thing. Oh and to clarify a bit, in case you're still wondering, or in case you've actually heard of this album but dismissed it because tags like "psychedelic death metal" or "progressive death metal" you feel are rather pretentious, trust me, this thing brings the same magic that the aforementioned Obliteration and Grave Miasma (and other recent OSDM bands) do, there's no bullshit here whatsoever. Also big shout-out to OsaX for his contribution on the previous page, as I've got Midnight's album Satanic Royalty (from which he posted a song) and it's fucking great fun. So that gets my recommendation as well, if you're into raunchy, hard-rocking speed metal fun. ![]() \m/

I know how you feel man , when I discovered this stuff , my mouth was open the whole time watching the video , all I can think of is "WHAT....THE.....FUCK ! " , this is addictive. As a fan of both heavy metal and J-pop , this band is like a dream come true for me , it really takes someone who listens to both genres to appreciate the brilliance behind this band , and lets face it , even long time fan of both genres like me NEVER SAW THIS COMING ! and I never thought it would work , but holy fuck it did ! the lead singer is really talented too, MARTY FRIEDMAN APPROVES ![]() ![]()

![]() Speaking of which, hardcore punk sure is better with black metal added into the mix, as Norwegian band Kvelertak have proven. It might seem like a cheap gimmick on paper, but somehow someway they make it work, and not only that but it's an excellently-executed, interesting and refreshing mix of styles. Extremely fun and catchy, but not remotely simplistic, Kvelertak's self-titled album is easily one of my favorite releases of 2010. Will listen to their 2013 outing Meir as soon as I can. %)

If you're into BABYMETAL you should take a look at Imaginary Flying Machines and their two albums where they take Studio Ghibli movie songs and covers them together with many famous melodic death metal bands.

since i just discovered this thread i'd like to know if anyone here has any information on whether or not Rise Against will have a concert this coming summer or winter in california. really like rise against, and they're the next closest thing to system of a down (i know serj tankian does solo now, but they're better as a band), imo. their website says "check back soon" so im hoping maybe someone has some inside info?

Since January i've been listening to post/prog metal (and variations) non-stop. I had plenty of these moments in the past, but lately I don't know why i'm all for that and only few other genres. Lento - Hymen (from Rome, Italy) I'm also back into the BTBAM loop, moving through all albums. finally, Russian Circles. they never overdo in their songs but damn they have such hypnotic melodies. Live they are terrific. also, if you have to suggest any other (unknown) band like the above ones, feel more than free to do so.

I have to say, even as a big detractor of revival thrash and new thrash in general, this is a solid, fun record, shifting between a very intense, Cryptic Slaughter-esque style of crossover and a more mid-paced, riffy style not unlike, say D.R.I. and manages to keep the excitement up throughout, I feel. The length keeps it accessible, although I wouldn't have minded a few more songs, or at least longer songs. Either way, it's definitely a worthwhile listen for anyone who's into thrash, punk or crossover and certainly one of the better albums of that sort of the past 5 years. Thanks for sharing this man. This is an awesome record!
