I think Dream Theater are alright... highly overrated, although their early albums are quite good. I also enjoyed Black Clouds and Silver Linings... Again, good band but not the most amazing thing in the universe. Not a big fan of power metal though, so Kamelot is kindof ehhh to me.

I still need to pick some of the individual songs and then go on youtube to fetch a link for every single one. Oh and don't necessarily expect obscure godlike bands that you never heard of, I'm not on that level of hardcore trve yet. Just some classics. ^^
Probably my 2 favorite bands, such a shame Roy Khan left kamelot the man has an irreplaceable voice!
I really need to get into both of these bands. I'm ashamed to say I haven't given either any attention at all, despite their legendary status.
Train of thought was decent from Dream Theater, and a few bits and pieces from their earlier works like "Home" and "Glass Prison", I just can't stand the vocals, the whole opera thing that their singer is doing annoys the piss out of me. It also feels like every song they make, they just try to stuff as much random riffs and cool solos and such into their songs that they end up kind of, eh, messy and unfocused.
I would disagree with that CC point of being mediocre. They are/were/will be relevant in their primitive bludgeoning and unique sound that was mimicked ad nauseum during the 90's cheese faze in DM; yet completely irreplaceable. Definition of Death Metal, even. I saw them live just after the release of Gallery of Suicide, and they are the real deal. I was standing by a pillar in the small club and stoically listening to the sounds when Corpsegrinder says, "For this next song, if you're not banging your fucking head, I'm gonna come out there and bang it for you!!" while staring and pointing at me. Well, then, OK, better do what the guy says... his neck is obviously bigger than mine. So there's a degree of respect there beyond what's on the CDs.
That Dust song above... the pic is from a Conan novel. Holy shit and it sounds like 60's music. Props there.
When I was at a Vader + Aborted live few weeks ago, one of the guy who was working at the bar of the place told me : "Well, I'm not into metal at all, but there's one very cool thing they have that almost every other band don't : they are very polite. They come, say hello, how are you, thanks, etc...". That fucking made my day and made me proud to be a metalhead :D

Yeah no I totally get that. I have nothing against Cannibal Corpse, and I can definitely see how influential they've been to newer death metal bands. But see, for me they've never been particularly clever or at least somewhat original. Even their early releases, which if I'm honest I'll say they were solid osdm albums in their own right, even those were a bit too influenced by early Death, if you know what I mean. And from then on, sure, they've developed their own sound, which was later copied by a lot of new bands, but even their own sound I find to be bland and rather uninspired. It definitely doesn't help that they seem to be releasing the same album over and over again. =/
But hey, it's alright if you disagree. ^^
Meanwhile, I've been digging a lot of Hypocrisy lately, both old and new.
Haven't heard the full album, but I was pretty excited hearing the Stratovarious song "Unbreakable" being played on GSL.
I listened to a few of the tracks from the new Kamelot album, and it might just me being ignorant but it feels like their new singer looks and sounds pretty close to their old one, which is kind of a win-win for both the band and the fans.
I really like the new Stratovarius album. I have always been a fan of their more, faster tempo and more metal'y songs rather than their slower ballad style songs, so this new album is right up my street.
There will definitely be Pestilence, but a couple of other tracks off the album. ^^
Currently looking into perhaps adding one more band (which would entail two more songs) before posting. So far there's about 60-ish tracks from over 20 different artists. Get hyped! ^^
Yeah Benighted is very cool, saw them last year at Hellfest Aborted don't take themselves too seriously too, and their guitarists are crazy gamers haha, last live during soundcheck they started to play Terra's Theme from Final Fantasy VI, was pretty awesome
