Each additional Headshot rank 25 damage at 40% chance, which is on average equivalent to adding 10 damage to every attack. Compare this to Luna's aura, which adds 9 damage per rank, affects allies, and adds the damage reliably which makes it better for lasthitting. Headshot ranks past the first one are really underwhelming because all of the real benefit of the skill comes from that first rank.

You could have made an argument for it being situationally right to max when the bash chance increased per rank, but now since the bash chance is fixed, it's always the last skill to max and potentially worse than Stats depending on the game. But actually, that 10 avg damage per rank addition is *decent* compensation to Sniper's real lack of innate damage (well, he has 2.9 agi gain but that's not nearly enough, considering you want both large amounts AS and damage on him). Poor man's necromastery with stun utility :D.

Shrapnel is better for pushing towers for obvious reasons, Take Aim increases the strength of your autoattack harassment (particularly once your autoattack range is long enough to autoattack an enemy hero from outside the creep aggro radius) and overall safety. Shrapnel max is more aggressive but also riskier because having to lasthit creeps at 550 range until level 4 opens you up to getting ganked much more easily. This is really the main problem with Shrapnel max--if you have 550 range, it's insanely risky to lasthit anything if the creep wave ever gets to a point where you have to step off the high ground to lasthit. Shrapnel max is better if you can get away with it, but whether you can depends on the roaming power of the enemy supports and the killing power of the enemy mid laner (there was a DotA 1 game ages ago that was DK vs Tongfu where Burning played Sniper mid vs a CK with a roaming VS--he was essentially required to get Take Aim ranks early here because without a significant range advantage over Reality Rift, farming without dying is basically impossible). Well isn't there room for builds like 2 points in Take Aim, 1 in headshot -> Shrapnel max (and ult of course)? Even 1 level in take aim gives you 650 range now which is an ok-ish margin over the standard nuke range and 200 at level 2 seems like it'd be decently comparable to the 240 of the old level 3 (or even better the 225 of pre-6.79 lvl 3 take aim). Idk it seems like with the buffs to take aim there's way more room for sniper's to take shrapnel early. Also headshot seems worthwhile to skill up mostly vs characters with evasion since headshot procs cannot be evaded. (Though you'd still probably skill it up last).

If you picked sniper when there are gap closers on opposing team, there is already something done wrong.

Thats not really an excuse now tho is it? If you random, you still choose to do it, and you choose not to reroll. Not all heroes can work in all situations, and sniper is one that works in very few of them.

Not all heroes can work in all situations, and sniper is one that works in very few of them. so you are telling me that i should reroll every single time when i get counterpicked? i think that you can make every hero work in most of the games, sometimes it is ridiclous and you get counterpicked 3 or 4 times when you are brood for example but i can simply repick if that happens. In my opinion the games in my mmr region (4k) are more about mechanics, understanding of game mechanics and teamplay than simply the hero lineups. And there are 4 other heros just because i have to stay a little defensive doesn't mean the hero can't be effective later. a game i played a couple days ago + Show Spoiler + guess the winner of this 1 hour game ![]() + Show Spoiler + ![]() It looks like bounty did get a lot of early kills but that is actually not true, he got most of the kills at the very end stepping in because we didn't have a real hard carry. We had a huge disadvantage early and they had all their t2 and t1 towers at some point when we didn't have a single t2 tower anymore. Venomancer was pushing out lanes with his necro book while the team was playing 4-man dota in another lane, the bots were used to get him into fights. Eventually their towers started falling and we won a couple of teamfights winning the game.

In my opinion picking is part of the game and an integral part of strategy, which is why you should pick for a good lineup, or at the very least be prepared to reroll that random if you picked Meepo vs Lina and Lion
