Also, don't underestimate the value of the little things like how much damage skills do, mana costs, item costs, animations, etc. At the root of everything, most of the complex interactions in the game come as natural consequences of the question "if I have X heroes that have Y levels and Z items, who can kill who?" and various permutations on that question (e.g. "if X hero is level Y and has Z items, what do I need to be able to kill him//what does he need to be able to kill me?"). For the most part, *answering* those questions are a matter of experience mixed with a little bit of calculation (i.e. take outcomes you known from experience and using your other knowledge try to predict what will happen in this somewhat different scenario).

tangentially relevant to your request but hopefully still useful; here's some mechanics and statistics information i have bookmarked. http://www.datdota.com/ database for professional dota 2 games http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/1lk4g6/a_quick_guide_to_lane_control_harassing_properly/ lane mechanics guide http://chaqdota.wordpress.com/2013/09/05/chaqs-ultimate-guide-to-advanced-solo-middle/ solo mid guide http://www.team-dignitas.net/articles/blogs/DotA/1092/Dota-2-Ultimate-Guide-to-Warding/ a guide to warding http://dotametrics.wordpress.com/ high quality dota statistics blog http://i.imgur.com/YwK9VRc.jpg detailed map of neutral spawn boxes, juke spots, and chokepoint jungle spots i'd also recommend watching merlini's stream every now and then. he plays CD/CM almost exclusively, and explains his drafting thoroughly.

Don't focus too much on how your teammates are playing bad or whatever. That stuff is mostly just going to distract you from looking at the game as a whole, especially if you're going to rage at them. I think the bolded portion is something that a lot of us low level players have trouble with. Most of the time, I don't know if a particular play is good. I just don't know enough about the game to judge whether the jungling Enchantress is doing a good job when she has a 14 minute midas (pulling numbers out of my ass just to illustrate). Or whether the Viper with phase boots is a dumbass for not picking treads. And further confounding me is that if you throw in more elements (IE Vipers boot choice against a particular opponent or opponents in his lane), it just gets harder to identify what is a good decision, and what is a shitty one. I think this is really the heart of my actual original question. EDIT: Rhyme, thanks for the links. I'll be scoping those out shortly to gain any insight I can.

This doesn't make sense wtfff. Ice Shards - Target Point Snowball - Target Unit Omnislash doesn't get blocked by Linken's Sphere, even though he drops linken from you and slice after it. That's what makes no sense.

If you get a wildkin with chen pre-level 5 (so you only have one creep), is it worth it to wait and stack camps or is it better to just farm normally? What is the standard skillbuild for earth spirit? I would guess this differs if you go mid versus offlane. Why do you see players like bulldog go for midas after phase, basi, wand on natures prophet? Why do you even see midas as a "core" item on natures prophet? Money is great but he gets a lot already, why don't people go for quick utility items like mek, euls, etc.?

Money is great but he gets a lot already, why don't people go for quick utility items like mek, euls, etc.? 1) Yes but they don't follow you long enough for it to be good usually. Like, them running after you is a lot slower than you towing them with lasso. 2) usually if you see a wildkin you should NOT TAKE IT and instead take something else, farm other stuff, and make sure to stack while you are farming. If you can manage you should farm one big camp while stacking the other, then take the wildkin once you want to clear the stack and go from there. 3) dunno i don't play with or against ES (CM/CD best modes hue) 4) I'm not entirely certain, but most furions aren't aiming for a "1-item" timing, but rather at least 2 items (necro/sheep) which isn't really slower when you have a midas since it takes long enough that the midas pays off. Plus midas allows you to "flash-farm" while still tping into fights. Besides which, the only 2K gold items that would actually impact a furion's strength at that point in the game are mek and force and you also see them get those items when they need to be impactful not ricing.

I think this is really the heart of my actual original question. EDIT: Rhyme, thanks for the links. I'll be scoping those out shortly to gain any insight I can. Its pretty difficult to identify but honestly its really just a time thing. It took me personally hundreds of hours of playing and watching to start even thinking about deviating from "normal" build orders and deciding what I need to build right there and then. Nowadays I feel a bit more confident about it, but that's only because I've seen and played so much. The only way to learn is to play, watch and read. I've picked up a lot myself from small throwaway comments on the DOTA2 forums here. Unfortunately there's no one way to learn it, you can't sit down with "The Big Book of DOTA2" and learn it because its an experience thing; so you just have to immerse yourself in the game. As for your specific examples, I'm pretty sure 14 minute midas is fairly bad for jungle Enchantress. And Phase Boots can always be good on carries who might need to chase or run away from an enemy; although in Viper's specific case it might be overkill just a little given that his orb slows, his ultimate is a huge slow and anyone who attacks him gets slowed due to Corrosive Skin. Regardless, I'd still not say its a stupid decision. Phase have a potential place on just about any hero who doesn't have a built-in ground-targettable "Blink" type ability, such as Antimage's Blink and Faceless Void's Time Walk, I think (except Tinker...no-BoT Tinkers give me headaches).

Just take it little steps at a time. Look at small things you can understand (e.g. I died here because I didn't recognize they had the burst to kill me, I could have gotten a kill here because I underestimated my damage). As I said, most of the other interactions in the game follow from the basic question of "who can kill who", so if you start there, you'll slowly understand more of the game. This you'll get a sense of by either watching or playing games to feel how much farm is good in a particular game state. For that particular question, the answer is probably no unless he's already got early fighting items and is transitioning into a late Midas for a farming phase. Situational, but Treads vs. Phase on Viper is actually a pretty basic example of an item selection choice that derives from the heroes in the game and "who can kill who".

That wasn't my question. Omnislash has a minstun on the first jump which can stop channels and tp scrolls. I just tested, and Linken's doesn't block that one either.
