I think camera grip is limited to spectator mode.

OK, so it seems you need to hold down left-mouse button + the camera grip key together for it to work.

That's an extra key compared to just using it like how it's by default ( holding mouse wheel button down and dragging the camera around..)
You must gather your party before venturing forth.

Yeah the "camera grip" in options is click+key, the "real" camera grip via mousewheel is unbindable afaik. There are topics popping up on the dev forums from time to time.

Go Phase. It helps you follow people around and synergizes well with the Ulti. Besides, you could go drums for raw HP.

Phase is more popular these days for the chasing and solo-kill power that they offer, but that is at least partially because spectres these days rush drums and thus have the mobility to ult into fights and contribute some if they need (or solo kill anybody who is grossly out of position).

If you are going for 30+ minutes of retard ricing into mega-late carry, then treads are still the superior option. Especially since tread-toggling helps you dagger around the jungle more times.

Its pretty unlikely to matter TOO much though.

Do you need the extra mobility and want to fight early? Phase. You have no trouble getting into range and want some extra HP and better scaling? Treads.

Do spells and abilities scale with items to some degree? A friend told me the reason he loves LoL more than DoTA is because that's something DoTA doesn't do. Fact or fiction?

Some abilities do, but it's definitely the exception.

Dota spells don't scale beyond the Aghs ult upgrades, Veil of Discord, and the occasional stat based spell such as Silencer's Glaives or OD's Orb. So essentially he is right; LoL spells scale with AP items while Dota spells don't scale. But Dota is balanced around that fact, so that isn't a problem.

Interestingly, Dawngate (new dotaclone from "waystone games" aka EA) takes this to the next level where the only offensive stat is "power" and on carries power gives them autoattack damage and on nukers power gives them nuke damage lol.

Essentially the idea behind that in League is that this way heroes that rely on their skills/abilities to do damage don't fall off in the late game, where in Dota these kinds of heroes have a much higher impact in the early/mid game.

Of course though because it is Dota, there are some exceptions.

Since I'm bored at work, 1 more. Kind of directed at Yango because he seems to be pretty knowledgeable: Where does one go to learn about the deeper aspects of DoTA? Hero synergy/drafts, which heroes typically fill which positions the best, item choices for each hero based on the opponents draft, and all the things I hear casters and pros talk about as if they're second nature to them, but are foreign to me. Basically, is there a be-all end-all encyclopedia of this stuff? It really seems like with a game like SC2, you can learn a lot of black and white things like build orders and counters because there are a somewhat limited number of interactions between them. With DoTA, the list is so god damn huge, that I really don't know how to absorb it. I apologize if this question is too broad, but I was just wondering if such a thing even exists.

That's the 2nd time in a week I've seen someone sig a quote from this GD and I have never witnessed a sig quote happen in my TL history ever before. -Najda

It's kinda hard to compare directly. If you're looking at it really basically - Yes, your friend is right, LoL spells have stat scaling, and scale to hp/damage/AP/whatever stat. Barring big-ticket items such as Aghanims / orchid / veil, your spells in Dota are gonna do the same damage from one game to the next.

HOWEVER, if you look at the items of League vs the items of Dota - Dota tends much, much more towards items with actives that allow you to do something you otherwise couldn't, and usually in ways much more drastic than comparable League items will allow. My favorite comparison to draw in this is comparing Eul's Scepter to Zhonya's Hourglass.

In League, Zhonya's is a ~3300 gold item that, in addition to helpful stats, provides an active that locks you in a stasis for 2.5 seconds, rendering you untargetable and invulnerable for its duration. That ability is on a 90 second cooldown, and in League it is (was?) exceptional - no other item provided such a personal, selfish, and powerful active.

In Dota, Eul's is a ~2700 gold item (Economies are actually respectably comparable!) that, in addition to helpful stats provides an active that allows you to render a similar 2.5 second stasis on either you, or any enemy unit within 700 units. This is on a 25 second cooldown. Now, just looking at the raw data, it's fair to say that Eul's is the more powerful active, but one last thing to look at is context. In Dota, despite Euls having a "better active", Eul's is almost exclusively used as a midgame item on specific heroes (and not all that commonly even then), not because it isn't a good/useful item, but because when you decide to pick up a Eul's, you're deciding NOT TO pick up a Mekansm, or a Blink Dagger, or a Force Staff - all of which are -also- incredible utility items that allow you to do something you couldn't before.

So it isn't fair to say Dota abilities don't scale with items, because a Blink Medallion Alchemist is an entirely different beast. Instead, I think it's easier to say that a huge portion of the time, Dota items ARE abilities, and the interactions of those abilities leave -plenty- of room for scaling.

-edit-

Centaur is awkward hero with stat scaling on multiple abilities. In theoretical two hour game, Centaur is big scary man.

Alternatively if you know someone who has a lot of experience and has the patience to talk to you about things, that works too.
Having a dota "mentor" can really help with item choices, skill builds, drafting etc.
if happy ever afters did exist <3 @watamizu_
