if you opt for bottle you can get heart stopper at lvl 2 and make do with 1 lvl of sadist for a while, otherwise you will go the normal 4-0-4-1 at lvl 9. bottle is optional/situational. you have decent lane control but you cant utilise runes as well as other mids, so youre basically only using it for the regen, which is why you can get an early lvl of heartstopper aura without worrying too much about mana.
the rest are the same regardless of what lane youre in. treads, mek and then whatever item is needed by your team.
usual pickups include pipe, shivas, hex, ghost scepter.
if youre playing the 1 position however, get radiance after treads and continue to farm lanes and jungles like a mad man.

That's funny, I just started learning necrolyte.

What if you're in a sidelane, like a 2v2 or whatever? Can you still take a level of heartstopper early? And what is the exact early sequence? QEQWQR or what?

Also I'm tending to see a lot of phase on necro... is that bad?

I have a question:
I was reading the Competitive Hero tier list September 01 - September 30 2013 and I see that Lion is almost never picked.

Why isn't Lion a more popular support hero in competitive play?
For me he has a good (reliable) stun, buildt in sheepstick, and burst dmg with his ult.

I can see that he's somewhat lacking in aoe dmg like some of the other simular supports...

Also, he doesn't have as much HP.

if youre in a sidelane you pretty much always want to go sadist. youre not going to get quick levels like you will at mid, and therefore you will struggle a bit mid game when trying to farm or fight if you dont have max sadist. if you do get heartstopper, it should be gotten at lvl 1/2 as it is constantly cutting their hp and the sooner they run out of regen the better. however, as said earlier its only advised you do this if youre mid and planning on getting a bottle. being mid allows you to get maxed sadist before major fights start happening and the bottle allows you to survive/use death pulse before you actually get sadist at lvl 4. i could see phase being useful in lane when against a thick hero or a high mobility line up, but it really doesnt provide much else. tread switching with death pulse is extremely good hp and mana wise, not to mention you can regen faster with agi treads and sadist. attack speed is useful for a hero who attacks so slow, especially if you go items like radiance where your right clicks might actually matter.
also, if you have an od in your team try going 4/4/0/1. chances of seeing it in competitive games are very slim but its highly effective in pubs.

the biggest reasons he isnt picked is his lvl dependency and mana costs. he has to be full mana to throw his whole combo down and hes pretty much useless after that. his 3rd skill was buffed recently to regen a huge amount of mana back, which is good, but he needs too many lvls for him to actually use mana drain properly. if icefrog reduced the mana cost any/some of his skills, i could see him becoming a popular hero again. if his mana costs are reduced however, personally i expect to see him at mid more than support though.

riki being tethered by io would be visually visible right?

does blink striking cause the tether to break? ( lets say the 3 are fairly close to each other)

He should be visible , the tether won't break if he doesn't go out of tether break range

Yes, all blink strike heroes cause instant tether stuns. That's why CK + wisp is the most powerful combo

Riki blink strike BEHIND the enemy hero, while PA just goes next to it. Riki guarantees a insta stun while PA doesnt.

If any when is it better to go Treads on Lifestealer?

I always go phase simply because the pro players do. I realize why this is, which is because lifestealer needs to chase people down and it can sometimes be very difficult pre-basher. However, it seems to me like he would really beenfit from the attack speed for feast, and the mana saved from switching would be really useful in the midgame if you dont go magic stick. Is it ever better to go treads vs slow opponents?

Considering rage gives attack speed, it's rarely a better choice to pick treads just for attack speed

if you dont need the mobility get treads. treads makes you hit harder.

It's not just an issue of the enemy being slow it's also an issue of your team having adequate lockdown. Where Treads help you manfight Phase makes you able to chase around more. Usually looking at both teamcomps gives you a pretty good idea of what you actually need this game.

The mechanic works like this :
When you issue a attack command you start autocasting a 500 range taunt that works on creeps, it has 2 sec cd. If you issue the command outside 500 range you have 2 free seconds to attack, if you have 600 range you can just do it all the time on melees in creep wave

so I should try to attack whilst outside 500 range from a creep then cancel and actually go for the attack within 2 seconds of that first attack?

Don't cancel. Just attack outside the wave and make sure to land it within 2 seconds.

My strategy works like this:

1) A-move lane
2) cancel attack before it goes off, move toward hero
3) A-click hero
4) animation cancel the back swing
5) a-click friendly creep

As Qbek mentioned, you have a maximum 2 seconds to pull off 3-5. For safety sake, do not sit inside the creepwave when doing this. If they stun you during 4-5, you will have creep aggro and possibly die.

Also worth mentioning, if you are being harassed, stun them during 4 for creep aggro. Once it's on them, they will have to issue an attack command on one of their friendly creeps to reset the aggro status.
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic
