Champions? Wrong section brah. We're the DOTA 2 section, not LoL. Should report you for that

On a serious note:-
a mid lane melee usually has a spell to help clear creep waves. Their job is not to kill the enemy mid 1v1 as per, but to at least make the mid lane a draw where he still gets farm & exp via his spells. Example of good mid melees are DK & Magnus, both of which has a wave clearing spell (shockwave & firebreath), they then bottle crow/attempt to control the runes to enable them to keep spamming their spells.

This should make the mid lane a draw, instead of a outright loss/win because it doesnt really happen when both mids are bottling up.

If you say your spells can't make the difference, your either using the wrong kind of melee heroes in mid lane(which is a auto loss vs any decent range heroes), or you got outplayed in mid.

Typically mid-lane melee's are heavily reliant on bottle-crowing and using their spells in timely fashion to clear creeps for last hits and harass at the same time (whirling axes, breath fire, shockwave). Also, most melee heroes mid have some solid ganking spell, so if you can free your supports on the sidelanes to gank, you usually can set up really solid initation for your fellow mid heroes (though, some require level 6 to stun, of course). Regardless, most melee heroes mid are designed to lose mid, but take away with average last hits and still some solid EXP.

Oh, i thought you didn't mention anything about bottling.

Most melee mids are really, really dependent on bottle crow.

A question about stat gains, I often hear people talking about don't get X items on X hero because they have bad stat gain etc. When I look at the wiki and see a hero has for exmaple str (1.7) does that mean each point of strength really grants that hero 1.7 strength?

No, the +Strength gain listed is the amount of Strength that hero gains on each level-up.

Alright, so what do guides and the like mean when it says a hero shouldnt get stat items, I'm assuming they just don't synergize with their skills and nothing more?

Give an example, the answer is highly likely to be "because the guide sucks" =P

%manareg is more effective the more int you have, so for heroes with shitty int you're usually better off getting other forms of manareg.

You're going to have to be more specific. You're either playing a sub-optimal mid hero or are just missing a few key mechanics with whatever that hero may be. A few tips:

Stout shield exists for a reason: To level the playing field in ranged vs melee. It may not look like much, but that damage block is amazing levels 1-3.

Bottle bottle bottle. Any mid matchup can be won by just having more mana to use than the other guy, so make sure you're keeping good rune control and wards are up around the rune spots. If your allies aren't buying wards, don't be afraid to get them yourself even though you're the mid laner. If you can't secure runes and need to refill your bottle, then call the courier over and have it bring the bottle to fountain and back, that will refill it (this is called "bottle crowing").
Thank you for that. Very interesting.

Okay. Thank you. I have a lot to learn. I didn't even know about bottle crowing before reading these replies.

Can anyone recommend some good mid-laning heroes for beginners?

Your bread-and-butter mid laners off the top of my head would be Viper, Queen of Pain, Beastmaster, Puck, Templar Assassin, and Batrider. Though, those last three are typically seen as difficult to play. Just play games with them and see which you like and which you don't.

edit: OH! and Shadow Fiend. How could I forget Shadow Fiend?

I would think that viper is the most "noob friendly" mid.
boring as hell though compared to other mids IMO

but you still have to know about using your orb to play him properly

edit- since your new and I brought it up i suppose i had better explain. if you manually cast an "orb" effect, IE Vipers poison, then you will not draw creep aggro. this means you can get right up to the enemy creeps and so long as you dont rightclick the enemy hero, you can auto attack him/her without taking any enemy creep damage.

Don't get null as a starting item, and almost never get it at all (only if you are losing quite badly).

Never get bottle at all. You don't have good rune control, and it restores a pittance amount of mana on OD. Tranquils/mek cover your hp regen, and aura covers most of your mana needs (clarities can work if you are really struggling, but most of the time I find I can get by without them).

If you are getting mek, make it your first big(ish) item.

Sometimes you don't need forcestaff (although its still a good choice). Sometimes getting drums can give you enough survivability if you don't need to get away from certain heroes, and ghost sceptre can also deal with quite a few of the heroes you need to get away from fast (ie ursa). Another option for mobility is blink dagger: it may sound silly, but astraling yourself gets blink off the damage cooldown and let you blink away, and it means you can sometimes catch people who are out of position (astral can prevent them from getting backup, or it can set up until your team gets into position to kill them) + Show Spoiler +
ps thanks for the fun yango
. BKB is needed straight up against some teams. Sometimes you can even go straight into hex without getting major survivability items.

I have ve to disagree on never getting null, in pubs it can sometimes be interesting to hit a strong timing with treads 3 null talismans to bully side lanes then quick forcestaff, you sacrifice some mid dominance (less points in astral to get orb faster). He does insane damage with only one point in orb, tranquil boots and mek (progame build), the item I described allows you to hit stronger AND earlier. Let's say level 8, 4 points in aura, 1 in astral 2 in orb, 1 in ulti. You still need a form of lockdown from side lanes

The thing is if you want to bully early game, Drums are going to be better than triple Null because despite being Intelligence-based, the hero is far more lacking in HP and attack speed early on than Intelligence and damage.

What I like to do with OD is start with 2 sets of tangoes and 5 branches.

Then go brown boots, magic wand, tranq boots, mekansm, force staff. I only disassemble tranq boots prior to getting force staff. Spamming buckler is a pretty nice way of triggering the mana aura. Just try to avoid catching creeps when you toggle it if you don't want to push the lane up. Buckler and Tranq pops should solve most of your mana woes unless you really have shit luck.
