Did Valve completely shit the bed with Artifact? The player numbers look awful and I stumbled upon r/Artifact, which was full of doom and gloom (but that's reddit).

I like Artifact, I'm going to enjoy it for quite a while. Draft is pretty fun IMO and i can do that for free infinitely. Plus I have some OP constructed decks so I play that every once in a while too.

there's also no progression system yet. true dota 2 didn't have ranked matchmaking for a good while after it released, but it already had a solid playerbase, and also as a team game, you could still have fun playing in a stack even without a sense of progression.

There are also a shitton of games in the "digital card game" space right now. Personally, I'm not picking up Artifact because I've already got Eternal, Slay the Spire and MTG:A scratching those itches. There's also hearthstone (...) and that anime card game (Shadowverse?), as well as Faeria and Duelyst... and whatever form Gwent is in these days, and the Elder Scrolls card game...

Artifact would probably be a different story if it was thrown into an otherwise empty market, but there are actually a ton of decent digital deckbuilders, some of which just require time and people are reluctant to give up on the one they play to start a collection in another.
