Back from Wagas camp. Pretty sweet spot with a lake backdoor, sauna, hot tub and so on.

Coaching is what you make of it and I basically just went to the scheduled sessions and tried to make our opponents play 2 games in 2 hours (worked half the time). Having a team you always faced made for an interesting experience but can also cause some burnout if one team wins too much over the days.

The sessions for gaming with coaches giving feedback worked well for people that asked for it with them discussing builds, hotkeys, decisions and doing quick replay analysis if you wanted it. I didn't really take advantage of that and instead just played or took a dip in the lake.

Overall the best thing was that it was a place where anybody (except people making food and so on) could talk about Dota and you had a common discussion point to start from, very inclusive feeling with some great people. Highest rated player not a coach was 6.4k (was as if playing with a coach) and lowest 1.6k. So the teams were balanced in tiers to get good matchups against one other team only.

The games I enjoyed the most was when playing in the team of a coach that basically ran the games exactly as he wanted them. Really made me feel how far behind I was in tempo and read of what I should be doing next. Easily liked HoviteY most of the coaches we had.

Sadly I didn't get a BC win in tier 8 since I ran into the coach team in the finals. :/ The mini tournament I lost in the first game at 80 minutes to a team that got to the finals.

The photographer that was there took some pictures and is slowly uploading after editing, so guess a few more shows up next few days:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1TP8EdYpxlbNewyKEAjZ8zuIDi_5Fd_wb

Waga streamed half the mini tournament, the BC game and a mix game during it I think.

That is pretty awesome. It looks like you all had a good age range there too, which is always nice. Nothing cuts down on the teen nerd posturing like an older nerds in their mid 30s.

It is so helpful to have people of wide skill levels in training, because they provide that direct feedback to your mistakes. Back when I first started playing in TLIH, rocketbear(chopper) just destroyed me every time I was out of position. I picked up more about wards and vision during those games than over 100 pub matches.

This almost makes me want to play Dota again. But Monster Hunter owns me.

Demon finally quit... cant say I blame anyone but himself. He's burned every single bridge he ever made because he was such a little fuck. Hopefully it's made him a better person irl because hes the most toxic guy i've ever had the pleasure of playing with.

All the fans of demon have never played with him, and honestly I'm surprised even some of the other competitive players even put up with him. When BSJ got into NEL he wasn't very good and was pretty annoying, but some people like demon basically flat out bullied him in a very mocking way. He'd pretend to act all nice to him and then make fun of him behind his back. Demons basically the kind of guy in highschool that would try to put people down to raise his own self esteem and would orbit anyone that was "popular". Notice that demon is now friendly to BSJ and no longer mocks him since he's a popular streamer.

Think one attendee was slightly below 18 or around there as youngest. Not sure how old the oldest was but I'm 31 and don't think I was oldest.

The mini tournament was mixed skill groups. I am Divine 5 and basically micro managed our offlane Axe that was 2-3k lower mmr than me on the same lane through Discord.

That is what higher skill players need to do when someone is punching above their weight class in a match. They are already so focused playing their hero against people that are more skilled than them, knowing where go can be a real challenge for them.

Exactly the part I enjoyed the most. I am only 5.4k mmr and thus a few games I was constantly behind on without needing to feel too bad about it. Though most normal session practices were fine since that was pretty close in mmr to my solo games but more coordinated and focused.

Would be interesting to talk to people of various skill levels and see how they play and how they think about the game. How was your experience in terms of how interested different players were in the game and how much they seemed to know compared to how well they could execute things?

My feeling is that dota is not a very mechanically demanding game, and broadly speaking the difficulty is recognizing various situations in the moment very quickly and simply knowing what you should do in them. Of course the scale of situations varies a lot, for example how should I use the fog of war to make sure the enemy doesn't see me and in what order should I use my spells to kill him as easily as possible vs. how should our entire team be playing at this point in the game given our lineup and the enemy lineup. But not sure how common different sorts of understanding are at various levels and how much it varies.

I think the best example is from when I played standin for a lower rated group a game (37 attendees). Their understanding of what heroes are strong or weak in the draft totally differed from what I thought (partially that they knew what opponents could play). Then in game they bought incorrect starting items that would be instantly punished in higher mmr such as a dual offlane puck only having a set of tangos and null talisman.

The difference is to a large degree in speed of reading the situation. When you talk to them about something they understand it but can't see it in game due to not clicking on enemies or looking at minimap enough. Simple stuff like glimmer TP almost always works because they need to see it happen once before they get the detection needed.

How lewd are dota camps? In retrospective every hockey camp I've been at has been insanely inappropriate.

Umm, not really that lewd as far as I can tell. Had some people focusing on memes though nothing spectacular there except mocking one of the core coaches for going 0/4/4 on Warlock.

In total there was 3 girls there, 1 attendee and 2 organising/staff. Might keep it calmer.

Topless was partially fine since bathing happened and it was hot in the main computer room.
