Wait really? it's a major? didn't valve state that majors should have 16 teams or something like that?

The 3 groups thing is new for them, but eliminating teams based on bo1+bo3 on day 1 is ESL's trademark. They've done it in every event they've had this season as far as I recall. MDL just ran their 12 team groups with 2 groups of 6 in 2 days, so ESL feels even worse in contrast

People don't want a league with fixed teams, but we still get the problem with format causing peoples favorite team to get eliminated "to early".

most people like formats that guarantee teams more than 3 total games at a major
sure the complaints are louder because it's EG out rather than say pain but people have been lambasting the structure ever since it was announced, and it's living up to expectations as an absolutely atrocious format.

It has little to do with eliminating teams early. Teams have to be eliminated based on a group stage that can't take longer than 2 days in an event of this length. But as MDL showed, you can run a different group stage format in the same amount of time which most people seem to prefer.

I mean, MDL guaranteed every team 10 games

you might go 0-10 (cough infamous) but at least you got 10 games at your major tournament that you flew across the world to attend

It is tough because the Majors are the biggest thing in dota, but the format is always going to be set by time they have the venue for and what is best for the organizer. The teams don’t have a lot of bargaining power to push for better formats.

A lot of this could be solved if EG were better at dota

Then some other team travels half way across the world to play three games.

Oh, yeah. The format is awful. Just commenting that EG hasn't looked good for like, a year now, and that the EG specific problems are more from a lack of skill than a shitty tourny format.

More Bo1 would solve this. You have the next game queued up and need no pauses for the teams. Well either that or running two BoX with alternating games.

This focus on pushing the next series as soon as possible is a double edged sword as well. If you have a 1h and 30 min break people know that and can have dinner or do some other activity. If you instead always have 15-30 min or so there are no easy breaks, forcing them in the middle of games for viewers.

more bo1 it's the problem because tournaments only have like 10 pcs

so each bo1 = EVERY SINGLE TEAM HAVING TO SET UP AGAIN

they never really have teams queue up to play right as the other game finishes or if they do, they aren't ready so what's the point

who has 10 dinners a day btw? come on, 1 1-2h break for the local people would be fine, but thats about it, at it's stand you have 1h break for every single series

I recall one tournament where games just flowed with a Bo1 group stage. That was due to having many sets of computers running it in a hotel or similar venue.

On scene no tournament has more than 10 computers and even if they used USB3 SSDs to get setup time to ~2 mins teams would still want some extra time for adjusting seating and generally mentally get into the game.

In a series it is usually ~15 min until the next draft starts. So starting anything means you miss first half of next game. It is one of those horrible times where you can't do anything but it feels long. Between series can vary a lot depending on how the tournament runs but around 45min seems normal (which is very very strange to me when organisers has problems with amount of games they can run).
