VGJ.Storm for TI8 champs.

At this point I expect EG to either show up at TI with beastly form and smash through the event, or fail to qualify at all.

I'm seeing articles from The Atlantic, The New Yorker, and Wired on Fortnite and they range from the writer's elucidations on the dark forest theory and how relationships are built or betrayed in the game, or another "These darn kids with their video games why are they into this?". Don't know why they all feel the need to write about it, but I guess they have to keep up with what their kids or grandkids are all obsessed with.

Someone needs to explain video games to adults. And Fortnite is huge, mostly because it is free and doesn't try to take itself seriously.

Its a pretty hard ask tbh. In the last month I've managed to play maybe 5 hrs of botw while fishing. I mention this to my dad: "Is that the kind of game that makes kids go shoot up schools?". me: "naw its more of a puzzle/exploration game really". Then trying to explain why that was actually fun to play. He tries to understand since both my brother and I have been playing games for 20 years, but he doesn't really.
P.S. Its a great game though, I've played no zelda before ever (switch is my first nintendo actually), and have avoided any online resources/playthroughs/etc so am playing it completely blind and am having to figure out tons of shit but its quite cool.

I just wish weapons werent consumables.

I feel like most people's problem with weapon degradation is that they wish to just keep using the same weapon, the second you don't try to hoard weapons and just use them as you go along you realize that you never run out
I ended up liking that i had to make use of what i had instead of just finding one weapon i liked and sticking with it for the rest of the game

Do you have the problem of finding one thing you like and sticking to it for an entire game with other sandboxes? I've never really played any open-world games extensively, but in my GTA stints I found I only liked one gun for pretty much everything.

It's almost the opposite problem later on where the weapons have so much durability you get way more weapon drops than you can use and you're either just ignoring them or juggling your inventory a lot.
I feel like the big miss with weapon degradation is just that the different weapons aren't meaningfully different enough, and fluidly switching between weapons isn't enough of a system to make it interesting for people. There's some dynamic spear vs a sword vs a 2 handed sword/hammer, but for most fights any of the three are good enough and within those types the weapons are largely interchangeable. For most of the game there's also not really that much tension in terms of saving quality weapons as you'll generally have a pretty good baseline quality of weapons that you're constantly getting once you start encountering stronger enemies.
So it feels more like 1/2 of a good system than a great one. They had the right general idea with throwing nearly broken weapons, but I feel like they should have leaned into it more to create a more dynamic system. The game is begging to have combat where you're constantly grabbing and discarding/breaking weapons across a fight in some dramatic fashion.
Like special attacks should be more interesting (or at least more varied across weapons) and quicker to come out with a trade-off of consuming a lot of weapon durability. I'd love it if you could special with a spear for most of it's durability to pole-vault and launch yourself in the air or slam a hammer down to knock-back surrounding enemies and temporarily slow time. But none of that is there.
If they could have made it interesting to switch weapons all the time, people wouldn't care that weapons break in a few hits and it'd be seen as a strength of the game by enabling an interesting gameplay. Hotline Miami is actually a great example of how fun it can be to constantly pick up and discard weapons (hit guy with bat, throw bat at other guy, pick up pistol, unload at guards, throw pistol, pick up shotgun, shoot shotgun then throw shotgun at last guard all as one fluid motion), but BotW doesn't really hit that same mark.
Basically all weapon degradation does in BotW generally mean is that every so often you open up your weapon menu and grab a new weapon from your stash, and pick up enemy weapons to stay stocked up. So it's kind of a missed mechanic for most of the game and while it's necessary still to keep you from scaling out of picking up any weapon ever, it doesn't really result in that deep of a system.
|
I'm sure weapon degradation being removed from the game wouldn't change the core gameplay mechanics and the fun derived from them since there is always enough. Makes it lackluster in my eyes.

I found it to be freeing. Once I realized that I could always find a reasonable weapon to fight with, throwing a good thunder sword at an enemy seemed like a great plan

Yeah, I agree that it's freeing to not be attached to your weapons and to not constantly be comparing stats to determine if you want to pick up a weapon or not, but that benefited the game's exploration and looting mechanics more so than the game's combat mechanics.
|
It's also a means of not rushing through the game because unless you're rather good at it, it's gonna be rather challenging fighting a higher level enemy with few and rather crappy weapons. You'll end up throwing bombs when your weapons are depleted

I don’t mind the weapon degradation at all so far although it feels a little weird that bows degrade also to me. But I’m literally barely past starting zone

The bows differentiate themselves more the further you get in the game so it makes a bit more sense then, but still is sort of silly since arrows are already limited.

arrows are a pain at first. I heavily underused the bow due to almost running out of bows, not arrows mind you, during the water based divine beast fight. In my like fifth attempt the last arrow breaking the bow got me the kill. boy did I almost throw the switch across the room during the fight... Handheld gyro aiming was too much for me lmao
