i get it if it means something else in another language, but if the entire history of the word is based on denigrating & debasing a race of people into mere tools or commodities, then using it is not ok regardless of the language/culture/racial background the speaker comes from.
even if it means something else in another language i'd be careful with the context & audience that I was using it with
given that iceiceice was clearly referring to african americans (not even black people in general), and all I can say is that he should educate himself before using words like that. it shouldn't even be part of your normal vocabulary.

I believe this discussion was sparked by the decision to moderate some possibly offensive words to some individuals who identify with some groups. So not an individual objecting to anything anyone said specifically. So the judgement calls have already been made for all of us as to what groups and what language this protection entails. On behalf of these certain individuals who may or may not exist. So we already are expected to give a fuck. Now this isn't necessarily a problem to me as is since I do not find minorities very relevant. My fear is however that these groups that are protected by default are joined by others, quite possibly objectionable ones. Such developments have already taken place in some places.
So as nice people as tl admins well might be I am wary of what I allow them to make judgement calls on. Not that my feelings matter.
There was a somewhat recent case of how power on the internet was seemingly immediately misused here but I can't get into it on my phone.

As far as the other discussion, when I was in high school in Alaska 15 years ago my social circle used “gay” extremely casually and even “f**” quite a lot, but I literally did not know a single openly gay person. On the other hand I have a cousin who is black and never once in my life was I allowed to consider the n-word acceptable. My senior year I dated a girl wayyyyy outside my normal social circle who was CONSTANTLY trying (unsuccessfully) to get people to not use gay like that. I ofc never said it around her xd. It was the first time I ever realized it bothered some people. Then ofc in college I met many gay people and I tried to stop saying it in public but still used with my friends.
Then in grad school I had a gay classmate who I rather enjoyed hanging out with, and one time when I was very upset at something I used “gay” rather strongly as a perjorative when talking to a group and I happened to see this hurt look flash across his face and I felt fucking awful. So I stopped ever using it and it’s not like it was missed. (That said the sole warning I ever got on TL was for jokingly doing it which I don’t even know why since I had long stopped saying it irl)
Obviously people should not use such words. There’s no benefit at all and they surely bother some people, at the same time I think the internet response to things like this is quite stupid. Whatever tho. The environment is shockingly different than 15 years ago that’s for sure and I have many rl friends who think that’s a terrible thing. It’s a pretty hard subject to change someone’s opinion on. The ones who aren’t succeptubke to collective social shaming need to have a personal realization pretty much I think.

You aint in your own house, of course you can't just be the shitty person you truly want to be. It's not your house, it's not public domain. It is an open, yet policed, forum. That isn't suddenly news, though you may not have realised it.
And this would have spawned from an individual (or several separate individuals) voicing for a safe space. Same actions, grander scale, still built on mutual human respect.
