I think that scene is to show that Shinji is completely tapped in the head and out of his mind at that point. It makes it more believable that he doesn't really care if he dies. | ||

I know somewhat, what they are, but I would still classify them as a mecha just because they have "pilots" and are fight giant monsters/angels/whatever.
