The bus system runs really well here and you never have to wait for a bus for more than like 10 minutes between ~8:00 to 18:00. After that there are fewer buses so you gotta wait longer if you miss one but they're still going all night so it's not the end of the world.
I don't know how it looks in other places right now in Sweden but where I live they have also started to put on pure bike lanes all over the place so it's even easier to just take your bike nowadays as well.
Idk, the whole drivers license, getting a car and everything that comes with owning a car is so freaking expensive here imo. It would probably be a nice freedom to be able to drive anywhere but seeing the money you can save and the fact that Scandinavian cities are so tiny that you can bike easily to your location or at least have solid public transport as a backup makes me putting it off.

i would hardly call it a talent..??

Also 100% necessary in the US. I think I would have had to bike for like 30 miles to get to a bus stop from my home town.

This was done by all the major automakers acting in unison

Both are true. Public transportation would never reach the most rural parts of the US(AKA my home town), but transportation between states like trains killed off by the US auto makers. Its why we have interstate highways.

I'm talking about specifically the dismantling of municipal public transit in each of america's major urban centers

seriously though like targe mentioned you can still learn to drive/have a license regardless of whether you actually own a car or not. it's a good life skill to have! like learning how to ride a bike or learning how to fry an egg or learning how to hammer nails in the right way and pull them out or how to pick up a baby correctly etc

Yeah, for proof of that you only need to look at the cities with the most robust public transportation and notice that it gets shittier the farther west you go.

Its real. The auto makes lobbied heavily to get the federal and local governments to invest more in roads over public transportation. There is no conspiracy, they just wanted people to drive more cars and roads were the way they got that done. Most of the public transportation systems for major cities are subsidized by the federal government. Its why our highway system is so robust too.

i live in the capital of canada and our public transit system is one of the worst ive seen, buses rarely come on time and sometimes 3 show up at the sametime. its mostly because public transit here are unionized so the management/drivers dont give 2 shits about passengers. they even went on strike for 2month in the winter because they wanted an unreasonable raise.
the government dont care because its mostly low/middle class that rides the buses.

yea that sounds like most american metropolises prolly

I used to attend uWaterloo and came back to Queen's, and Kingston's slowly getting better public transit.
It's still absolutely atrocious, but it's tolerable now.

Mississauga transit is fine from my years living here. It's not luxurious but buses come on time mostly and seem well maintained. GO Transit is solid though you pay a premium for it so I use it only for long distances like from Mississauga to Toronto.
