you haven't seen lab class in common core, then. if they deserve the grade then you won't get fired. if you are just failing people for shits and giggles then ofc.

but like..New York state fucked these poor kids. they're failing literally because New York State is a piece of work.

I do magic tricks for my kids bc I can kinda relate it to the topic and I actually get their attention that way. I also make immature jokes about how to remember certain formulas, rules, etc. we do stupid shit just bc we know it works..even if it makes us look totally retarded.

I had the same teacher for 4 of my High School math classes and he was super cool. He went on the Ski/Snowboard trip and he was the most legit snowboarder I've ever seen (he's in his 40's too).

oh lord this pretty much deserves its own thread. but i'll give you a couple examples..

they released "model lessons" that were designed for 45 minute periods..we have 41 minute periods. in addition, their version of 45 minutes is if I talk straight through the lesson..for the full 45 minutes

they made it so that kids in 9th grade got placed into Common Core classes without having grades K-8 Common Core..so when they shuffled the curriculum, these kids have gigantic gaps in their knowledge..so I have to cover shit that they should know already AND what I'm supposed to teach them in the aforementioned 40 minute period.

one last example..we've never seen a test before so we have literally no idea what it will look like. generally speaking you should know what your test looks like before you teach a topic so you know what to teach

He loved math
in his spare time he did math shit non-stop.
he contributed to some fractal or another that was published in some book (look i don't know much about publishing fractals).

My middle school math teacher was also super memorable. He insisted that we call him "Dr. Levitt" even though he wouldn't say what his doctorate was in. Turns out its astronomy LOL. The whole class loved him because if you could get him on a tangent you successfully scuppered an entire day, nothing reined him in until the bell rang hahahaha. He was teaching the advanced math part of the advanced students program though, so nobody in the class suffered for the lack of instruction.

So have I, just not that low level. I had a few High School teachers that had Masters/PHD's.

My HS comp sci prof actually taught University comp sci for years first.

alright technically it was "junior high" (grade 7). also it was the heavily accellerated program, and it was the good at math group out of that program too.

no PA, nobody actually wants to be an astronomer

I'd guess most end up in academics through teaching at a uni or doing research. Most are well versed in Physics as well (cause you know those subjects go hand in hand).

I had a math teacher in 6th who had her PhD.

Granted it was in something english related so her ability to teach math was... questionable.

no I teach in the suburbs. go google what's going on in education in New York state its a complete shit show. the governor is being paid by testing companies and the legislators didn't read his new bill which fucked teachers and kids on top of all the BS with the common core tests and implementation. complete disaster.

idk about your teacher sn0_man, but I personally take short tangents bc if its something worth talking about or the kids are interested in it..its worth it. lately, I've been spending 5 minutes finding random statistics that are funny or interesting because it's worth discussing in our unit on the topic. talking about what interests them does a lot of positive things if you can spare the time.

but yeah I could probably be making 3x the money doing something else..but I like working with these youngsters even though I know that most of them will give me grey hair before I'm ready

Keep in mind that heavily unionized systems prioritize union seniority (aka time in the union) over everything else in terms of getting what job u want so being overqualified means jack shit when there's a union in charge
