Gaming communities managed to pigeon hole themselves into the biggest thing and nothing else. Getting exclusivity while taking content from the top dog is a controversial thing (EPIC store and streamer signings) while the top dog may be doing the same to squash up and coming competition and nobody bats an eye. Wanted to comment on this. I've been studying competition and mergers in the digital markets recently and something that makes competition for type of platforms quite different from more traditional goods and services is that they have agents on multiple sides of the market and indirect network effects due the multi-sidedness. They need to serve at least viewers, content creators and advertisers at the same time. Viewers don't like advertisement, but advertisers like viewers. Content creators like more viewers, and both advertisers and viewers prefer more advertisers. Then to add to that all of these parties have the capability to be present on several platforms at once. The cost of developing infrastructure and running it the barriers to entry are significant just from the technology aspect alone. The incumbent's advantage becomes huge. Facebook, Microsoft and Google have the money and infrastructure to overcome the technological barriers, but we've seen how slowly the alternatives gain traction. I haven't seen ninja's numbers from mixer but I'm gonna guess they were significantly lower than on twitch. What else can a platform realistically do than offer an exclusive deal to one, if not the, largest individual streamer? It'll be really really difficult for any competitor to seriously challenge twitch for a long time. Twitch doesn't even need to be better than the other platforms, it will by default benefit from the fact that it already has the most viewers and content creators, who will all likely be individually worse off if they move away from twitch. If the market is to become more competitive it will probably have to come through content creators being present on multiple platforms simultaneously. If viewers can choose which platform they want to watch their favourite streamers on that would give the streaming sites an incentive to improve the product (streaming site) they offer. Right now if you want to watch tournament A or streamer B you often can only do it on a single platform and that means platforms are incentivized to lure and lock the content creators to their site (like the Mixer deal Ninja had) and hope that pulls the viewers with them. Money goes to sign exclusivity deals, not to develop the streaming sites and features of those. It may genuinely be that only one or two streaming sites can even be viable in the market, unless you have everyone on board you have nobody on board. Similar to how facebook and its offspring (IG) are the only social media platforms of that type, despite Google's attempts to establish the Google+ or w/e it was called back then.
