I guess is just the love for certain hero? I couldn't play any hero for 1000games, my record is probably played rubick for 2 weeks straight back then (~50 games max). reading my thread makes my head hurt it's like reading a progaming team's Facebook fanpage - post a picture of Oz/MC/whoever, instant "LOL FOREVER A VIRGIN" comments. Wait dude that was you???? lol since you are a TL-er, then wp for you haha now tell us why/how/what drives you to pick SK in every game! whoops I'm not Pirate, I have no idea why I typed 'my thread' instead of 'that thread'

Not to mention the fact that Riot is hostile to other dotalikes as 2GD mentions here. I also read some random LoL pro's comments on how Riot employees basically order ESL staff around at events; they have a lot of leverage as they are the ones with the money and aren't afraid to throw it around.

But yeah, probably the most depressing thing about the video are the comments. My god, some people are crazy. It reminds me of people that would be in a cult of some sort, and they are completely brainwashed.

For what it's worth, Riot Games is a company that relies on retaining its players in its game. It has no backup plan. Therefore, it can't afford to play nice. It's a small company whose unlikely success has found it in the big leagues against everyone. Right now, they're in a dominant position in the market thanks to releasing earlier. And you'd be a fool to think they're not going to leverage that advantage as hard as possible. At the same time, their support for their game has been astounding. They really believe in E-Sports. It's quite surprising how much they've done behind the scenes. Compare this to Blizzard or Valve. These companies have cash cow franchises or other means of financial support. Valve practically gets showered with money due to Steam locking in its customers to its distribution network. Valve could never make a game again and they'd have a viable financial future. As for tournaments, ultimately, they have a business to run. MLG was in the red before Sundance came over. He's not running a charity here. If DotA proves to be commercially viable, then it's something he'll explore. Even a trial tournament or one off event is not without its risks (and not just financial risks). I have no doubt that DotA tournaments will eventually breakout to the same level of exposure that League enjoys. But to think it's just about money... not quite.

I do wonder if this is the disagreement they had with WCG which caused loL to not be on the list. I would give them props for it if it were the case. Granted, I do not have any evidence so just a blind guess.

On August 01 2012 09:01 Itsmedudeman wrote: Lol? Do you even know who funds riot? Ever heard of tencent? One of the biggest corporations in the world? There's retaining players, and then there's trying to hold a monopoly-esque grasp on dota genre games by bullying their competition out of tournaments. They don't believe in esports. They believe in competition attracting a lot of attention. But why have they withheld adding a replay system for 3 years and why was it only until recently (coincidentally a few months after valve's) a spectating system was added? How come their competitive players don't get necessities for competition like runes and heroes for free? It's hilarious when they have to remake a game cause someone doesn't own a hero. Ok. I normally have a policy on not responding to things that are obviously going to end up in an internet arguement.. but I'll bite. Firstly, Tencent has a majority of the shares in Riot Games, however they have no control over the operations of Riot. That was actually a clause that was negotiated in the 2011 purchase agreement. You're free to go read it if you don't believe me. Secondly, what do you really want Riot to do? They're not going to just roll over and let everyone walk on them. If a company can negotiate a non-compete agreement, then they're going to take it. No company is really going to go out there and do thing for a vague principle such as the moral good. I highly doubt that if the tables were turned, Valve would just let Riot set up a tournament right next to them every MLG. Take Team Fortress for example. It's a massive franchise that practically dominates the F2P FPS market. Valve isn't going to stop throwing money at that in the name of competition or E-Sports or any other vague principle. It hurts the market as a whole. And it's completely within their right. Every company does this, whether you realise it or not, whether it's under or over the table. Thirdly, the Spectator Mode system has been in development for nearly a year. It's not like they magically created it out of thin air. These things take time. So to say they lifted it right out of DotA is a misnomer. Fourthly, in official tournaments players play on custom servers that are flown into the tournament venue and given special accounts with all content unlocked. You are probably referring to low level online tournaments. If you're really at the level of playing LoL seriously, you'll have sunk enough time in it to have unlocked everything you need.
