Having a flat bottom doesn't really apply. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plateau_(mathematics) "A plateau of a function is a part of its domain where the function has constant value." It really doesn't matter where on the function the plateau is placed. It doesn't have to be in the start, it doesn't have to be in the top it doesn't have to be in the bottom, it just needs to be a part of the function with no change.

Example: knight, knife. The K wasn't always silent. This isn't English-exclusive, and spelling always lags behind pronunciation.

The B just looks wrong in so many ways.

It's so simple. Note that I don't know the actual etymology. That's just my lay guess.

This isn't English-exclusive, and spelling always lags behind pronunciation. Portuguese just had a massive spelling change with and orthographic agreement couple of years ago. Lots of words (like 1/20, not even exaggerating) had mute letters. But then they went ahead and removed some that were not so mute in portuguese (but were in brazilian portuguese) so everyone kinda made a fuss and some of it was reverted back (made optional actually, so you can write it both ways).
