Well I don't think trying to support players who pick tiny, never buy boots and rush AC is going to make me improve. I have to find some middle of the road where I can have more of an impact on my own. Edit: I love bane and have picked him a bunch of tea in the last month. I was able to get a bunch of solo kills, but every gank with nightmare failed because my teammates wanted to get in on nap time.

In Magic, sets of new cards come in blocks, each block has three sets. Every couple of months a new set comes out, always one whole block a year. The most popular format is 'Standard', which is the 2 latest blocks. Then there's 'Block', which is just one block, 'Modern' with roughly half the cards and 'Legacy' which has all of them. There are tournaments in each corresponding format. This system allows Wizards to do amazing stuff with the meta of the different sets. I think this would be really interesting in Dota. Let's say IceFrog released 40 new heroes with the next version and made them the new standard, then released 10 new heroes every two months and rotated it like that, they could do 'reprints' when they put old heroes back in the pool, etc. I guess the draft would also have to get changed somehow, probably more bans in legacy, maybe less in standard, etc. You wouldn't really need to care that much about balance, because by the time the standard got figured out, it would start rotating. And in the legacy pool there would be so many heroes that hopefully the new ones wouldn't fuck everything up, especially if there were more bans in that system. The meta would constantly be fresh, and there would be more variety with more formats. I mean, this is probably entirely unrealistic just for the fact that making so many new models and effects for the new heroes is impossible. (although with steam workshop and valve's army of 3d artists everything could be possible :D ) Also IceFrog alone would probably not be enough to make and balance all the heroes. Even in Magic, they develop new sets 2 years in advanced with multiple design and development teams, the last phase is ex-pro players testing the cards and doing power level tweaks to the cards. It's really fascinating reading about it. I don't even know where I was going with this one. I just like thinking about stuff like this and wanted to ramble about it for a while.

And when your carries don't want to carry, you do it yourself http://dotabuff.com/matches/637996622 I also think Bane is really strong in pubs. His ulti is one of the best comeback ults in the game because no matter how far behind you are, if they can't fight back they will die.

And 500+ heroes in the legacy pool would be a clusterfuck. Getting a couple of heroes a year isn't a problem, there won't be too many heroes for a very long time. Interestingly, the idea's been suggested and considered for LoL before IIRC, since Riot has a far more aggressive release cycle than Icefrog does. EDIT: With regard to Bane, I actually think he's better mid in low level pubs. His laning is oppressively strong while being very hard to play around for inexperienced players, he easily sets up ganks and solo kills, and can snowball the game very rapidly regardless of his item choices (Blink is fine, Necro is fine, team items are fine, Dagon or DPS items are ok if you're snowballing hard enough).

Didn't they even give up on their a hero every two weeks release cycle, or something like that, because it obviously wasn't going to work forever?

They did, but even as they are now, they release champions at least twice as fast as DotA releases heroes. (8 champions were released in 2013).

The thing with NP is that it's really hard to develop a good solo tempo because if your team is doing stupid shit while you farm and splitpush, there are a lot of heroes that are threatening to you even if they are less farmed than you--and many of those heroes also happen to be popular pub heroes as well.

When someone says that a hero is a good "pub hero" it's generally implied that his/her skill set is easily understood and usable.
