Also honestly, the design formula hasn't changed much(Although there is definitely changes from gen to gen so you can definitely have gen preferences) so i'd say yes it's notalgia goggles if you think it's because the new designs are dumb

Gen 5 gave us trash-pokémon(As in actual trash not bad design) while gen 1 gave us sludge-pokémon.
Gen 5 gave us a pokémon that was just gears while gen 1 gave us pokémon that were just magnets.
Etc. They really aren't that different.
