Thoughts about how they are going to run The International qualifiers, as leaked by 2GD during today's The GD Show?

Do you have a VOD for The GD Show? I heard 2GD was talking about how he wanted to do something with pros and I didn't get catch it.

You people are missing the point as none of that has to do with fighting "broken" with "broken" or "everything is overpowered" as others like to say.

Heroes having particular niches doesn't make them broken. If they have a very powerful ability and are weak in other areas, that's what makes them balanced, not broken.

And again, this is still just comparing to other games, which doesn't make sense in a balance context. Lets say you have 2 games.

First game, you have 2 heroes. They are exactly the same. The game is "balanced".

Second game, you have 2 heroes. 1 has a stun, 1 has a longer duration slow which deals some damage. Lets call it "balanced".

In comparison to the first game, the second game is fighting "broken with broken". And when people say the same thing about Dota, it only means something in comparison to something like league. Which again, is irrelevant in a discussion of balance. What it's actually about is design philosophy, and in Dota that is that every hero should have something unique and/or play differently. But you could make another game which takes this to an even further extreme which would make everyone say that Dota is just doing what Riot does in that comic.

It's called "Asymmetrical Balance" and terming it "Fighting broken with broken" isn't as wrong as you want it to be teapot.

I really enjoyed last year's TI Qualifiers at the GD house, it sounds like they're doing something similar this year but bringing in people from JoinDota, and a bunch of pro players and celebs. I hope they have the small crowd aswell.

90% of what the gaming community end up calling balance isn't actually balance in the purest sense but responding to the community whining over things they consider un-fun (which people tend to like calling imbalanced because with certain developers this tends to attract their attention to the issue more readily).

Except it is, because broken is a relative term. As I already pointed out, in comparison to the first game I said, every game is 'fighting broken with broken' unless it's a complete mirror.

The issue being addressed here isn't comparing the gameplay of each game directly to one another, but the developers' response to perceived imbalance as raised by the community in each game.

Put differently, it's not "how Riot/Blizz/Valve balance their games", but "how Riot/Blizz/Valve respond to balance whine". And while the gameplay between games is not comparable, balance whine is universal.

Not quite. In n64 bond you could put on a mode that lets everyone kill in one shot. Everyone was OP and broken, but it was still balanced.

I totally used to do that. But then again I didn't own a n64, and the fucker who did kept practicing alone. He was much better than me even if he had to aim manually

How is everyone overpowered in instagib.

If you're not more powerful than someone else, you're clearly not overpowered, you are equally powerful and thus 'average'.

So do you think that their balance philosophies are completely different in those situations compared to as they would be from internal testing or during development?

I mean these ideals are placed on the developers in every context, not just responses to balance whine. And my original comment was about the general notion that people place on Dota that everything is overpowered, not solely the comic.

Oddjob was considerably smaller than the rest of the cast in that game. So much so that if you didn't manually aim you would shoot over him.

That was my point. Its mirrored, yet the characters are broken by the game's standard, but its still obviously balanced. What I was trying (failing) to prove was that you can have mirror match ups be "fight broken with broken".

edit: Except for oddjob. He was just broken fullstop.
