It seems simple but a lot of pub players in mid don't know how to totally suppress the opponent mid, even in a situation where they're winning and give the enemy mid more space in the lane/game than they should. If you crush your lane mid, it reduces the pressure on your sidelanes because the gank threat from the opposing mid is weaker due to his lack of items/levels, and because the opposing mid cannot secure vision of you as easily if you have control of the lane, the enemy sidelanes still have to play around your gank threat. Often in pub mid lanes, players don't establish firm control of the lane before trying to gank. Because of this, one of three things often happens when they gank which destroys any advantage they had: 1) They get counterganked, killed, and are now behind in the lane they were ahead in, as well as potentially putting the lane they ganked for behind 2) They succeed in ganking, but the gold/XP they got from the gank doesn't outweigh the gold/XP the enemy mid got from their free-farm time mid. They put a sidelane ahead at the cost of no longer being ahead mid. 3) Their gank fails, and they let the mid the were ahead against get free-farm time. They didn't put a lane ahead, and are now behind in a lane they were winning. If we're talking about low mmr games where you're far more skilled than everyone else: 1 shouldn't happen and the issues in 2/3 shouldn't be significant since the enemy mid can't farm/use farm efficiently to be a problem. If we're talking about average mmr games where you're more but not far more skilled: 1 shouldn't happen and you get a midas so 2/3 don't matter. If we're talking about near equal mmr games: Everything is situational. If you're trying to win the game by yourself as the mid player, more often than not, the problem isn't deciding whether to gank or continue farming, but it's how you take advantage of it. If you successfully gank a lane, instead of going back mid to farm, you can just push down the tower. In relatively low mmr games the enemy either won't defend and lose the tower, or won't defend well enough and feed + lose the tower. Usually, if they want to save the tower, they'll need help from their mid player and that would force them off of free farming which fixes a potential issue. If you choose to farm instead of ganking, then either the enemy mid player continues to contest you and feed or he/she will try to gank other lanes to catch up. If he/she tries to gank other lanes to catch up then you should pressure mid, attempt to take the tower, and/or get a midas.

What you are suggesting is pretty complex and it requires you to know the hero matchup well as well as having the skills and guts to totally suppress your opponent. Totally suppressing your opponent in mid actually isnt that easy unless you have good map awareness and or good warding a favorable hero matchup and or outskilling your opponent. If you do it actively and you slip in focus once and miss that a hero is off the map for some time it can easily backfire. As true as it is with ganking being high risk, totally suppressing your opponent is also high risk. I really cant disagree with the simplest way to win mid is to "win mid". But how valuable advice is it really?
