Pulsefire Ezreal was like 30 dollars lol, its an Arcana Terrorblade, not a Rare. Cosmetics in Dota are in general just as expensive/cheap as in LoL as far as I can see with the added bonus that you can trade cosmetics, buy them on the marketplace, combine your own cosmetics to customize your hero and that they can drop for free.

Ofcourse its expensive and ofcourse not everyone is going to get it, that is also one of the appeals behind getting an cosmetic item/skin, to have something that others don't have.

I'm genuinely wondering. I have a good salary at a fulltime job, yet I can't bring myself to pay these prices for tiny cosmetic items... who are the people actually paying Valve for this stuff?

Its not about having a fulltime job and a salary, its about willing to pay the price for such an item which does not always have to do anything with having a good or stable income. For some people its worth it, clearly not for you.

The only annoyance I have with cosmetics is that the levels of rarity are getting blurred and ugly shit is being slapped with pointless titles.

Is there a list somewhere with all these arcana items? All I can find is the Lina one.

Terrorblade, Lina and LC yeah.

You can check the store and type Arcana for a list if you want, I guess.
Or dota2wiki.

I don't think you understand what something being 'worth' anything even means.

Things in this world which don't generate any measurable value have a worth which is entirely subjective. Cosmetic items, more appropriately called vanity items, are no different than designer clothes. Their worth has absolutely nothing to do with the quality or workmanship which goes into them, they have price points where they can gain a reputation of exclusivity and still sell a high volume of product. It isn't even necessarily the case that the price point is the one which would be most profitable, but there's more to it than that, Arcana items are the big exclusive sets which is what separates them.

Generally in these cases people also need to understand that the price point being correct or not (if we assume "correct" being that the entire motive is to just make that single item profitable) depends entirely on statistics which the only people who have is Valve. I don't shop at the fancy clothes stores because their prices are too high, does that mean they're wrong? Of course not, I don't have the data to say that they would sell more at lower prices. They have the data, and they spend more time thinking about their profits than you or I.

Which is exactly why I ask. The reason the price is unreasonable is because other people apparently do not find it unreasonable and pay it, so Valve keeps the price. Apparently several people in this thread to not think it's expensive at all, which blows my mind, but I guess that's why. I don't have a problem with Valve checking statistics and making money, I'm just surprised at the statistics.

I also don't think it's fair to compare pulefire ezrael to the arcana, at least not with the arcana I've seen, pulsefire ezrael is very different. That said, pulsefire ezrael is unreasonably expensive as well, I don't know anyone who has bought it because of the ridiculous price, most people just wait for the skin sales and get them then.

All your questions are answered in the post which you quoted. A price being 'unreasonable' falls into the same category, it's equally subjective.

Not really. My question is "Who are the people who pay for this stuff" and you answered why Valve has set this price point, which I already knew. They have this price point because people pay tons of money for a different colored helmet in Dota 2. Which is super suprising to me, and was just as surprising in TF2.

I guess people just value "exclusivity" in a video game far more than I expected.

Everyone is different when it comes to their disposable income. I earn significantly more now than when I started playing Dota 2 because I had just graduated uni at that time, yet I don't spend any more on the game. Some people would spend based on what their earning. Some buy very few items but only high priced ones. Some buy tons of items but only on sale. In this kind of ecosystem you have all these different types of items to satisfy different types of buyers, except the people who think that they should be able to buy everything, because those people don't live in the real world.

And as for the exclusivity point, these are vanity items. The more exclusive they are, the more they are worth. Even if there is an unlimited stock, if you are constantly seeing them then they aren't worth as much to you personally. So to someone, they would rather have an exclusive item than have 15 which they see all the time.

Finally there's of course the consideration that the price is simply less significant to some people depending on where they live or their economic situation. I live in London so £20 doesn't exactly get you very far, it's all relative.

If the people would not value exclusivity then freely playable dota2 would not even exist, there would be a payed version. Its the exclusivity part which is key in there business model.

I don't see any reason not to buy a cosmetic item here or there. Obviously being norwegian helps, but paying 10 euro for a full set for a hero you like doesn't really matter at all in the long run moneywise.

What else do you really get from that low amount of money that is so insanely valuable to you? It also helps support a game I play way too fucking much, which is technically free.

I spent nearly a 1000 dollar in dota 2 so far. I have about 2000 hours logged. It's the only game I really have been playing the past 2 years. I work from Monday till Friday. I don't have any other expensive hobbies so I buy cosmetic stuff because it makes me happy and I know worst case I sell it and buy other games on steam. Question answered?

i agree, its completly reasonable to buy cosmetic stuff/ingame tickets etc. i mean you didnt even pay for dota2 a game you most likely spent hundreds of hours on.
it rly isnt that far off...

I have to say I'm not really sold on any of the Arcana to date. I mean I could afford it if I really wanted it but...

Well put it this way. I don't play LC much because I've found its not really a hero for me. So I've not bought that one. The Terrorblade one isn't all that impressive so no there too. Lina is one of my favourite heroes but bluntly I just don't like the look of her Arcana.

I don't know about everyone else but when I see them first come out I get a bit of a "WANT!" urge for a little while because its new and looks good and stuff; then I just cool off and realise its not all that great or its not on a hero I'd really play. *shrug* If they bring out one I like for a hero I really like then I'll probably buy it though. So I guess that sort of answers the question of "who buys these things". I would...if there were any I really liked on a hero I played a lot.

In contrast I've previously bought the Lone Druid Panda set and in LoL I've bought Popstar Ahri. And I'm REALLY tempted by that new Luna set. >_>
