I've never felt the need for the same level of spamcasting is necessary here, so it feels more like a preference thing than one actually being objectively superior to the other. i've only ever used league's smart+self cast (e.g. orianna ball shield) because self cast was alt+Q/W/E rather than double tap.

Does anyone have any experience with it? That's why I've never used the old normal cast again, smartcasting is just way better. I prefer the League's one though. In league, although it's also smartcast, the spells are executed when you release the button, so as long as you hold down the key, the spells don't cast. In dota though, spells are casted as soon as you press the key, so sometimes you can still miss aim your spells, hence. Smite also implements both kind of casting from both games (smartcast and instantcast). I've been using smartcasting in every games I'm playing now.

That's because Dota2's quickcasting is badly implemented. In LoL or Smite, spells are executed when you release the button, so when you still hold down the key, you can still see the AOE and can still aim to where you want. In dota, spells are executed instantly, so it's harder for spells like soulcatcher.

Soulcatcher is all about preplanning and timing, it's completely the opposite of what smartcasting is. Anyway you shouldn't really rely on smartcasting. The large majority of spells in dota aren't about how quickly you can get them off but rather about when to use them.

The large majority of spells in dota aren't about how quickly you can get them off but rather about when to use them. It all boils down to how comfortable and suitable you are with the casting system. A person can be good at normalcasting blink pudge hook and terrible at quickcasting, and another person can be the opposite. There're no indications or statistics that show one way is superior than another besides people who are complain about something that they don't even play for 5 games. The term quickcasting is misleading because it implies you have to sacrifice accuracy for speed while it's not. It's just another mode for spellcasting, and completely our choice to choose to use it or not. Dota2 is not a special game where if you use quickcasting, you're putting yourself at disadvantage (half of spells in dota are target spells anyway).

to me it seems like quick casting is fine even for aoe spells as long as you are intimately familiar with the radius.

Dota has very few combo-based heroes that combo with single-target spells that need the same level of optimized combos, and a lot of combo-based heroes have spells that don't require precise targeted spell clicks, I.E.Tinker, Storm Spirit, Queen of Pain. Where in League it's fairly common to have a caster type hero that has two or three single-target spells, it's actually quite rare for Dota to have heroes with a bunch of precise spells. So I'd say it's generally less important to Dota, but if you're eblade blink dagon tinker, you might as well use it :D
