Loda has been to more Lan events than the vast majority of people in the Dota scene. If you come to expect people to behave a certain way then if they don't you will be a bit shocked. You won't be sitting there thinking 'well this is just like in Football, people get told they should kill themselves all the time even though they really haven't done anything wrong'. (football for which the reasons of rivalries run much deeper than they do in eSports regardless) And just because it happens somewhere else means that it should happen in eSports. MLG has rules against it, yet we have people like you here saying it's fine. I'd say the opinions would be different if this was people telling Bulba to die in Sweden, but that would never happen. Sweden has significantly worse hooliganism problems than the US has, that doesn't mean it belongs in eSports. But I don't expect more from the American Dota community, opterown thinks that's me being bias and that there really isn't that kind of atmosphere against Alliance, but I have a hard time not seeing it.

Eagles fans would throw D batteries at the other team. Until acid fill peices of metal fly through the air, the cool million alliance won can help them deal with the mean teenagers.

True. It's like somebody playing Tennis or Chess, so they come to the tournaments expecting the crowd to behave different way. Suddenly they come to their Chess tournament and the crowd acts like it's a soccer riot, of course he should be shocked.

Ultimately, MLG is going out on a limb still to make this work. There's no guarantee that this is sustainable in the long term yet, so why the fuck as a DotA fan would you do something that could make a major international team that is probably a critical component of MLG's viewer numbers not want to come back? It's not like there's any shortage of tournaments for Alliance to go and win. They don't need to come play in MLG events if they don't feel welcome. MLG needs Alliance more than Alliance needs MLG, and shooing Alliance away from MLG only hurts MLG, and by extension future NA LANs.

And the more video games become esports, the more like actual sports they become. Partisan crowds come with the territory. Sometimes it manifests as fans jumping up and down to throw off your rhythm. Other times it's Manchester United singing 'sit down you paedophile' for ninety minutes every match for ten years. I don't see any reason to feel sorry for Loda, nor Paddy Kenny after he got the 'you would have saved it if it was a pie' treatment.

From a practical standpoint, it makes no sense to shoo away a team that has no practical need to come back to this LAN, but where said LAN actually probably depends a lot on the viewers that are watching their event because of that team. I don't care if it's "wrong" for people to be jeering at Alliance. I care because it's retarded and has the potential to actually affect future NA LANs if Alliance does't want to come back. Whereas no team is going to back out the World Cup just because of a few mean-spirited fans.

I also think you're overestimating how much average dota 2 fans (or MLG viewers) care about "promoting Esports" or whatever.
