I've played with him in pubs and all and he's one of the coolest, most chill guys I've met in DotA. The way you put it I'm getting flashbacks of Testie at the end of competitive HoN before DotA 2 came round. Farm all day forever then die when fights start. Not comparing Black to that in any case~

Since SC2 is not free to play and is likely never getting LAN, its not that impressive.(Its nice, but its not like they reinvented the wheel) Its easy to make a game free when the way you make money isn't selling the game itself.

There are still issues with a free game having Lan. In fact there might even be more issues, because free games are still making money, shadow networks screw with that. While a game like SC2 has already made the majority of money they will ever make. Granted there are less problems with Dota as unlike LoL it is a truly free game. The only reason people would have to play on other networks is if those networks add something new or provide more stability. While for LoL they could just unlock everything. Blizzard however is one of the greeder companies in the business. Not the most, but they are up there. So it's to be expected.

Few games have LAN any more, Dota 2 is the exception, not the rule. Most FPS games don't often have it. It is just the way games are now. Its a nice feature, but at the end of the day, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for a lot of companies to add it to their games. Blizzard isn't really that greedy. I have seen far far worse. They support their games for years after launch. Its not perfect, but there are companies that just leave their games high and dry after one patch.

Hosting a Lan server with a team of engineers on stand-by is very different from letting players do it. In games like WC3 you had dozens of networks built around the fact that it supports Lan. If this wasn't the case, WC3 would be just another RTS game, and Dota wouldn't still exist.
