Now my problem is they want to 5-stack all the time, which is fine, but the roles are a bit messed up due to the fact that the skill levels are so diverse. Now I'm not going for a fully competitive team, but at least we want to win the majority of our AP/SD/CM games. That said, how do we diversify the roles/positions of everyone? This is the distribution of the players: Player A. Played/Watched Dota since 5.84 days. Best (and most experienced) player. Used to play in local tournaments vs WCG-bound teams. Plays all positions, but has the most experience solo-mid. Up to date with current meta. In High/Very High bracket. Player B: Played/Watched Dota since 5.84 days. Casual watcher/player. Decent in lane, but bad decision-making. Good at snowball heroes that aren't high mobility. Can play carry decently (and well, if baby-sat by good support). Player C: Played/Watched Dota since 5.84 days, Casual watcher/player. Decent to good at certain heroes (Viper especially). Good decision-making. Weak mechanics, weak reaction, but very cerebral player. Can't play carry very well, unless ranged carry. Player D: Played/Watched Dota since 6.xx days. Casual player, but doesn't watch pros. Bad map awareness. Decent at farming. Good when paired with teammate, bad solo. Can carry, but doesn't keep good creep equilibrium. Player E: Only recently played Dota. Very fast learner. Hardcore watcher, plays as often as Player A. Good map awareness, bad decision-making. Decent solo player. Very good Huskar/Viper/Lich player. Still learning (and learning very fast) to the point that Player A thinks Player E is now the 2nd best player on the team. Anyway I'd like to ask for your advice as to how we can best play. What positions should the players take? Player A, for example, is me (not trying to be arrogant, since I get utterly owned at times in pubs at High/VH), and I've recently felt that my pub games go better when I actually play support. I normally feed, but we always have better warding and teamfights. Sometimes I feel though that I could have played solo mid and dictated the teams' pace much more than as a support, and of course done much better in terms of lane dominance. My question boils down to this: assuming a team of players who can be objectively be ranked 1-5 in terms of skill, which ones would you put at which position? It depends on your playstyle preferences. If you prefer to play passively and protect your one carry, then either carry or mid should be your most solid players - mid is the kind of anchor to your team during the early/mid game and the carry should be efficient and have good enough game sense not to get picked off despite his teammates' efforts (and eventually needs to be clutch in fights). If you play high mobility, high octane, multi core team, then the most solid players should be in the 4-5 roles as they dictate the tempo of the game and make things happen, and if successful will allow the cores to snowball. Even when the things go badly, they can do more with less networth and have a chance to turn things around instead of just getting picked off all the time. My group which was similar to yours in terms of skill gaps between players always put the worst player (guess who that was) in the carry role and attempted to amass a large advantage in the first 20-25 minutes.

Put the weakest player on the carry and the other 4 will attempt to win the game 4v5 so that the carry can actually get items to close out the game. Pretty much what my stack does too. We just tell that guy "you must come out with a certain items by xx mins, you can dont join teamfights, or if you join you must not die" rofl.

Any experienced LD players know what i should do for lanes like that? Nothing much you can do. Just try to interfere with the creep waves behind the enemy tower so that it will push towards you, then you can get last hits & exp. Make sure not to lose the bear though, its 300gold. Barring that, the only thing left to do is jungle. Or do ancients, non-stacked. You can clear the ancients with just phase boots+stout shield on your bear, its a slow & tedious process, but it's better than nothing.

other option is to just go jungle. if you're not getting anything accomplished in lane/feeding kills just go jungle instead

I'm assuming you were offlane, so you can pull creeps and farm at tier2 if you really need to, i don't think their range is that farlol other option is to just go jungle. if you're not getting anything accomplished in lane/feeding kills just go jungle instead thats what i do, i honestly think i can take the lane, i just cant make a single mistake, also the second death i had was due to rubick getting a haste rune, the thing is, they were sacrificing not pulling and stacking to get kills on me, and i also slowed them down, i just think there is a way to make it work to at least level 4 before its jungle time.
