More to the point, if necrobook had an upgrade to make the creeps not midas/dominate/infestable, then the item itself would be imbalanced. 5 guys necrobook rush would be the new comeptitive meta.
Ever played against mass necrobooks? Just start with an early pushing 5man lineup, use the first gold to get necrobooks up then push with necro creeps. If you don't have heroes like enchantress and chen in your team preemptively, you *need* midas/hotd to fight back. I don't see a "can't be countered" upgrade happening anytime soon.

I feel dirty if I pick Treant. I know that I can just sit in lane and make all the other lanes win with minimal effort. Mostly I feel dirty because pubs seem to not understand wtf to do when they see a guy with living armor popped on him.

I don't think it works that way (as one had been activated via your account previously) If you don't mind paying again, you could make a new account and trade the stuff back?
I dunno if you can just buy one through your current compendium and trade it then activate and get the gifts, or if you'll have to pay full price through the new account though
