Nobody's boots stay at Tranquils the whole game anymore if they can afford the swap. I'm not sure arcanes are ideal on centaur but I guess they are an option. Centaur's mana costs are really not that high and I hesitate to put him in a support role where mana boots are good. Treads or Trav's are what I'd upgrade to but its situational as usual. If you are getting kited a lot post-ultimate then phase I suppose are the choice.

I don't even bother with tranquil's and hes one of the least mana usage heroes in the game. If your struggling for mana just leave your stomp at lvl2 for a few lvls. Starting items on Centuar - 2x healing salve (his health pool is huge so tango's don't go far) - 1x tango - stout shield - 1x Iron branch I just get basic boots and rush out a hood of defiance on centaur. I generally then get helm of Iron will. At this point you have solved your hp regen issues and with the magic resistance from hood you can pretty much spam lvl4 double edge all day. Finish power treads. Turn helm of Iron will into armlet of Mordiggan (I don't bother with vanguard these day, armlet is almost the same cost and does so much more). Finally pick up Heart. If you get off to an insane rolling start you can try rushing a Reaver for a Heart of tara early. It's pretty insane on centaur.

It stops you hitting the tipping point where you just stop dying. It scale's really badly on Centaur in the late game, as soon as you hit 16 your stampede cool down is so low its up every team fight for initiation. That said, if you don't pick up blink you do need some help in early team fights when stampede is down.

He doesn't really scale well as anything else but as a roaming, ganking, initiator. He has some decent problems against any team that has and uses TP's well with his ultimate alone (which has a long cooldown earlier on). You are just wasting his potential by not getting a blink.

I believe it's a failure from conception to go blink on Centaur. There's so many other heroes you would rather see blinking in. One of the the reasons no one plays axe competitively is exactly because all you can do with him late-game is be a bad blink in imitator. Why bother when characters like Earthshaker or Magnus can do the same thing but vastly better? Where Centaur does shine is flattening most other heroes in the 20-30 minute mark of the game, his burst damage and high natural strength gain combined with a modest item like armlet lets him play a role like chaos knight in the mid-game and in the late game (where chaos knight starts to fade off as well I might add) you at least have stampede to fall back on for value. It's worth noting Centuar does have a much faster farm rate, atleast in the early stages of the game, than heroes like CK or Tiny. As soon as you get up hood of defiance and hit lvl7 for 4 lvls in double edge you can almost one shot an entire creep wave and can do it to smaller jungle camps.

You really cannot compare the carry potential of CK and Centaur. CK is definatelly on a whole other level. Phantasm and Crit actually makes him a pretty decent lategame carry. And the fact that axe is overshadowed by other initiators doesn't mean that you should build Centaur in a way where he is overshadowed even more by similar midgame carries. Yes, people didn't pick axe very often, but people also never picked Centaur as a semi-carry, and the change to his ult didn't really change much regarding that role.

CK's carry potential, far into the late game, exceeds Centaur's ability BY MILES. CK has one of the strongest raw damage crits in the game, and an ultimate that further amplifies his damage by 400%. If you play him as a 2, of course he's going to fall off. But teams have run him as a 1 on a semi-frequent basis, and if you build for the late game, CK is a fine carry.

I believe there is a significant timing window to use centaur as a semi-carry. Centaur has a much faster farm rate in the early to mid stages than a hero like CK, he can reach decent mid games items significantly faster than him. The change to his ult has given him an alternative form of imitation.
